2013-2014 Dates

Postby Levantou » Sat Jul 13, 2013 9:30 pm

Hello,

When does the DNR usually release the dates for the upcoming duck and goose season? I am newer to waterfowl hunting so this is the first year I am really anticipating opening day. Thanks for your help!

They usually cut pretty close to the early goose season...

Yea at the end of August, they keep the dates usually the same besides they changed our late season to a four day split.

Im sure we are going to have this ridiculously hot 85 degree "early teal" opener... which means 1st week in October... Does anyone else hate that early opener as much as me?

No. Not me. For the past several years we have gotten a 60 day season. It opens when it opens. When it has closed much of the landscape is frozen and the migration has passed through.

All of my attempts to control the weather have been unsuccessful. I have long since stopped complaining about it.

I'm with John here... Most of my bag in the last 5 or 6 years has been woodies and the first weekend in October is perfect for laying down the law in flooded timber. Plus outside of the last 2 or 3 years most water is frozen by mid December and the migration has passed.

Z1:Sept21-Nov10 & Nov23-Dec1
Z2:Oct5-Dec1 & Dec14-15
Z3:Oct12-Dec8 & Dec28-29

Most importantly, CWAC adopted the following for a 3 year trial.
Z1 will open on the Sat closest to Sep24, Z2 will open the first Sat in Oct, Z3 will open the 2nd Sat in Oct.
The splits can be adjusted annually.

Any info on the youth hunt dates yet? When I checked the DNR website it still listed last year's dates.

That's still last year's info:

"To participate in the youth waterfowl hunting weekend on September 14 and 15 - youth 10 to 15 years old must have a small game license and be accompanied by a parent, guardian or someone 18 or older designated by the parent or guardian. Youth under 10 must be accompanied by an adult at least 21 years old, and the youth and adult must meet all the provisions of the Mentored Youth Hunting Program. For more details on managed waterfowl areas, reserved youth hunts, daily shooting hours, daily limits, and species restrictions, see the 2012-2013 Michigan Waterfowl Hunting Digest and 2013 Waterfowl Reserved Hunt Application Digest."

Same as last year?

Thanks, Dan. I figured you would know. My oldest is pretty excited.

Any idea why the DNR is so slow this year on getting guide books out and updating the website info? Oh, wait, silly question.....

I don't think they are the same - 9/14 & 15 in 2012 would have been a Friday and Saturday - probably just a snafu or a timing issue with availability of the new guide.

It's always a race to have the guide books out before the season starts, as the CWAC and NRC meetings aren't until early August - the good news is that going forward the regular seasons will open with consistency so folks can plan ahead (this was adopted on a 3 year trial basis).

For future reference, the CWAC makes their recommendation for the early goose season and youth hunts at their March meeting - here is a link the minutes of the March 2013 meeting, you can scroll through and see the recommendation for this years youth season.

Good luck on the youth hunt!!! Be sure to post pics!!
