hot wheather geese

Postby merlyn » Wed Jul 17, 2013 3:59 pm

I hunt early (sept.1)goose in wi. it seems to be getting hotter every year and i wonder if or how geese react to the heat.
after the first hour or so they get real hard to find and i wonder if they feed or layup different on hot sunny days.
any insight or wild ass theories appricated.
thanks,merlyn

They do the same thing here in western PA. By 9Am they are done flying, just loafing around. Really they have no need to fly out anywhere to feed when all they have to do is bend over and feed where ever they are. To many food sources avaiable to them. The early season is nothing but a shooting season. That's why I just can't bring my self to hunt in September, just to easy. If you hunt it, early season, get in and shoot them up early and leave.

Now when the birds switch over to the higher energy food, (corn, wheat, etc) than I'll start hunting them. Usuallly around the 2nd week of November for me, than I'll start hunting geese. Even than I don't hunt them with a passion until late December and January when the other hunters have given it up for the year and I have many places all to myself.

Hot weather--they will feed early in the morning and then sit on water and just loaf around the rest of the day. Here, if we are hunting in September, we are done by 9:30 or 10 am.

No doubt it feels like it gets hotter every year... I hunt SE Wisconsin, early season you sweat your butt off in shorts and a t shirt lol. Early mornings seem to be decent then they disappear.

Find a beach on the river where they are loafing set chair in the water up you your shoulders and bust em when they come. Nothing like goose hunting in trunks with no shirt.

Early season here in NY I like to hut the river. I don't have to be in a field before light. I got out late and catch them as they come back to the river to water and loaf around.

I don't touch fields until later in the year when they are hitting corn consistently. Mostly loafing ponds until October or November.
