September Teal Season

Postby dingersoll1 » Thu Jul 18, 2013 3:25 pm

Never hunted the early teal season in the Chesapeake region. Anyone been out then with good results? Any advice or insights?

shot my limit the last two yrs on opening morning on publc ground. I scouted the three days before the season last yr and the results showed it because I only seen two other boats with birds. the are very scattered most yrs. but with some scouting and patience it can be a blast

Just want to add that in early season the teal can be there and 3 days later be gone or severely depleated in your area. Remember blue wing teal start to migrate very early like in August . I hunt by Blackwater Refuge . Some years I don't even see any teal because they have already past us by. Other years I have gotten my limit in 15 minutes. It is hit or miss and the birds are scattered too like the other person said .

Thanks for the extra info, the knowledge is appreciated. Sounds like if I'm gonna have any success I'll need to get my scouting in and hopefully the migration will cooperate. I was planning to use 15 or 20 mallard decoys, mostly hens, rather than buy teal decoys. I read somewhere that using the hen mallard dekes could be sufficient for early season teal. You guys think I should spring for some actual teal dekes?

I will be hitting it hard this year. I took a guess on the dates and asked for leave. I got 10 days straight from the 17th-27th!!! My new Gator-tail rig will be here Friday!!

Just use mallard hen dekes they are just like using bigger teal dekes def use a mojo though its like crack for teal especially ones that haven't been shot at in a year

Mdfoulman is giving you some great advise . Mojo teal is a must . Two is even better. I like to put it about 6 inches above the waterline . I have had better luck the lower they are to the water . I used hen mallard decoys for about 5 years and they worked ok . I went out and bought 3 dozen greenwing teal and a half dozen blue wing . I feel the teal decoys work better plus but in my area I see more teal in the oct. nov. season than any other ducks even mallards. But if you only want to buy a mojo or floating decoys then buy the mojo or mojos .

Thanks, we have plenty of hen mallard decoys, so I think I am going to use those. I have one Mojo, buts its a drake mallard Mojo. We'll see, maybe I'll get a Teal mojo, but on the other hand I might just use the drake mojo for now and see how it goes.

The teal mojos work much better for teal . The wings move faster and are smaller . Just a heads up. They also work for other ducks.

as far as faster that is true faster wings work better. but smaller makes no differece the avian eye has no perception of size

Mdfoulman I agree with you about smaller and avian eye perception but I mentioned smaller because fast wing action and the total surface area of 2 mojos is better to see at longer distances to attract the teal than 1 mallard mojo. The short distance size of the body of the decoy doesn't matter of either mojo but to get the fast wing action and the wing area of a mallard 2 teal mojos will fit the bill better. I should of clarified better.

Well I think I got my early season blind ready. Going to head to Fishing Bay this weekend to ride around and get a feel for the water.

Well spent the day Saturday riding/ fishin around Fishing Bay. Didn't see any teal, but did see quite a few big ducks. Need to get back out an do some more scouting closer to the season.

Nothing migratory on the Chester River that I saw over the weekend. Resident geese still hanging around as they have been all summer, but that's about it
