Opinions on Buck Garner calls

Postby Marc1985 » Fri Aug 02, 2013 1:45 pm

The wife is putting me on a budget of $20 for a goose call and I was looking at the Buck Gardner Canada Hammer II or the Grey Ghost Diamond Wood Polycarbonate. What are you opinions and thoughts of which is a better call for canada goose. I know there are much better quality calls out there.

If I had it my way, I would be getting the Molt Gear EX3D call, but the wife has spoken. :crying:

I have a hammer 2 as well as a PC-1 and like them both as they are both in your budget...

First I'd tell the wife that her next pair of shoes can't cost more than $20. That Gardnerer sounds pretty damn good for the price.

Made my mind up, I got the Canada hammer combo pack with the electronic pocket call coach, straight talk instructional DVD, fowl play hunting DVD, and the call all for $20 shipped.

I have 3 much more expensive calls on my lanyard but my Hammer is still in the blind bag in case the others freeze up or I need a luck change. Its a great call for the money

Well I got the Canada hammer II and after 3 days I went from "*** is that noise" to "horrible". Been watching alot of the Field Tested Instructional videos and some RNT videos on YouTube and they have helped me out. My handle placement is good, but the hardest part for me are the mouth mechanics and applying the correct back pressure, at times I get a good honk and a good cluck and when I do I try to mimic exactly what I did, but after about 30mins I stop and give it a break for an hour or two and watch more instructional videos and then go back fresh and attempt to progress. One of my problems are for sure when I use the tip of my tongue when I should be using the back of my tongue, when I do use the back of my tongue I raise it too fast making the honk or cluck too high pitched and cutting off the call too soon. Just at the end of the day today, I tried (for the best way for me to describe it) what it felt like to me was smoothly raising the back my tongue while saying "hoooooogh" slowly. Idk if that's necessarily the right way but that's when I started noticing it was finally starting to sound like a goose... Sometimes

Are you pushing air from your belly or from your cheeks? Don't blow into a short reed like you blow out a candle.

I blow from my lungs, with my mouth on the call like I'm drinking from a bottle of water.

No doubt that it is somewhat user error, but I will admit that those calls are a bit stiff. I started out on a Canada hammer and I also bought the DVD Bad Grammar which was excellent. In one of the last segments Scott shows how to tune a call and that helped.

I'm slowly getting better, I'm getting more and more consistent on the call. Come early season I think ill be soso with the call but I'm sure it will be no where near broken in. I'm practicing every day outside, and I went souring this morning and found a flock and I did a murmur and they stopped in their tracks and looked at me, then I hit a click and they started to moved on.

Bucks are good! I live my Grey Ghost. I started on an RNT Goosezilla. That call is 20 bucks and I killed lots of birds with it. Also the Zink Power clucker is only 30.

I started the same route for my first call, you will be frustrated in the beginning but with due time it will come together. It's a good thing I drive to work alone! Practice practice practice-good mechanics!

If you're looking at calls in that price range, I would look at the RNT Goozilla or the Field Proven poly Raptor
