since it is a drake, would not the head have green in it if it were crossed with a shoveler??? I have no idea, just asking...

Wait...I was thinking shoveler based upon the "-ler" part of the name. Now looking at it, I'd venture a guess at Gad/Whistler hybrid.
I've never seen a whistler in person, so I couldn't really be positive one way or the other.

Are you sure that is a hybrid at all? I got a mature drake gadwall sort of like that a week or so ago. I just assumed it was a variation within the species. The wing was perfect example of a gadwall speculum. The head was basically like yours.

From the cornell bird lab site this is one photo of a drake gadall.

It's a 3rd or 4th generation hybrid shoveler/gadwall according to a very reputable source. It distinctly different in person from other gadwalls killed that day.

And I'm pretty sure that's what my last gadwall was as well. It was distinctly different than any other gadwall I've got, but I didn't really think anything about it. Oh well, he tasted good.

Am I correct that the end of the bill is a bit wider than a pure gassy, but a lot thinner than a shoveler?
