2013 waterfowl regs

Postby phutch30 » Wed Aug 14, 2013 9:31 am

2013 proposed regs are open for comment. 3x daily possesion and a weird split season for geese in the central flyway and ducks and geese in the pacific. They are proposing to close the season for 4 days from Jan 6-9 (mon-thur) and open it again the 10th-14th(fri-tue). Im all for a split season but this is stupid IMO. Why not just open it 4 days later and run it thru. If they are gunna split it do it in the middle. Here Jan is the best part of the darn season. Who cares if we can hunt them in Sept when its 90 degrees

Anyway
Read the proposal and comment or dont and hold your peace

What good is a split at the end, that is the hunting that a lot of us want to extend. Where do they get these ideas from? A split mid-end of october or just start the season a week or 2 later would be ideal in my opinion. I'll be commenting. Thanks for the link.

Thank you for the link. Where do these experts come up with this stuff. Any kind of split season causes more trouble than it is worth.

One of the commissioners proposed the late split similar to last year during the last meeting in Helena to squeeze an additional weekend out of the season. FWP can adjust however they'd like provided the total number of hunting days does not exceed 105.

Its still a silly way of trying to get another weekend in. All they would have to do is open it 1st weekend in Oct rther than last weekend in Sept.

Agreed. I'd be okay with a bigger split between the youth hunt and the regular opener too. As much as I support the idea of a youth hunt, I have to admit my anticipation of the regular opener has faded a bit.

Thats exactly what i said in my comments. I support and participate each year in the youth days but would like to see a bigger gap between youth and general opener....and a mid season split

A bigger split between the two would be nice, but how does the youth hunt make you less excited for opening day??

It makes the local birds spooky. Hot weather, mud and mosquitos dont do much for my duck hunting excitment anyway. I'll be in Alberta hunting moose, deer and waterfowl for our opener this year anyway so I guess it really doesnt matter

Yep, it's kinda weird to see birds flaring on Day 1 but I've primarily encountered that at the WMAs. And it pushes out most of the bluewings ahead of the opener. All is not lost. I've got some private land and hike-in options where the birds will not yet have heard a shotgun blast.

Ditto on the skeeters, phutch. Probably not so much down your way as dry as it's been there but Canyon Ferry likely will be loaded with bugs.

I hunt the river , so My season doesn't get going till the potholes freeze, plus I dont enjoy shooting brown pinfeather filled ducks.
I'd rather have the season end at the latest possible date , they can work on whatever start date and split they want, just run that baby into Jan.

I'm over the 80-90 degree opening day deal. I'm guessing late season around here is probably fantastic for the geese.

I enjoy the oct portion of the season and certainly dont want to see a change there. I say leave it the same. You take away days in oct and add um to january you screw someone and benefit someone else. Season is great right now and hard to complain about.

Usually the person doing the screwing gets the benefit

October can be a fabulous month, I've lived in a number of areas in MT and in Idaho and in most areas, oct. can be fantastic. For many water hunters, taking away days in oct is not a good thing, imo.

I wouldnt lose any sleep if the 1st half of Oct went away. I hate dealing with pinfeathers and unplumed birds. Oct hunting is never consistant around here. Last part things pick up but the middle is pretty slow.

I hunt water 95% of the time right up to the last day of the season. Late season water hunts are way better then early IMO. Less water=more use of whats left

Regs are out. They didn't listen to my comment. Looks like I'll have to bring a cooler opening day for all the brown ducks we shoot.

It looks like they didn't listen to anyone's comments. The regs appear to be unchanged other than the changes that were proposed by FWP and the Commission at the last meeting.
