Which one do I want?

Postby migrabill » Thu Nov 02, 2006 12:35 pm

Hi guys- I'm new to the boards. I have deer hunted most of my adult life. I live in Maryland. The day after Thanksgiving a friend of mine is taking me on my first duck hunt ever. We are going to Bethany, Delaware. If I am lucky enough to bag one, I would like to get one mounted. He tells me we hope to see and shoot at Mallards, Blacks, Gadwalls, and maybe Widgeons. Of those, which one would make the best mount? Is there any there you definately would not spend the money to get mounted? Anybody familiar with the area that knows any other type of duck I may see? Thanx for any answers.

Well first off, :welcome:

As far as the mounts since I have never seen a black duck that would be my pic. But you would want to mount the one that either means the most to you or looks the coolest.

A drake mallard will probably have the most color, but the widgeons are nice looking birds too. That area should have wood ducks, IMO those are the prettiest birds.
I love my job, it fascinates me. I can sit and look at it for hours.

If I had it to do all over I would mount the first duck I ever shot. Which was a drake mallard. I don't care if your first duck is a hen mallard I'd mount it. You only have one first duck.

Of those my favorite would be the Widgeon, but a black duck or a good looking mallard would go on the wall before that for me.

migrabill, welcome aboard! Keep in mind, ducks are like everything else. Whether it's deer, squirrel, rabbits, or humans, they are not all created equal. In other words, some ducks of the same species, just plain ol' look better than others. Some are just plain "ugly ducklings". You'll have to be the judge, at the end of the day, which will make the most handsome, or pretty, mount.
Best regards,

When people think duck, they think drake mallard. If you want something people will recognize, go with a drake mallard. If you want something rare to your region, then mount whatever that is. A lot of guys mount any redhead they shoot around here, but in other states, like texas, they wouldn't waste the money because there's tons of em. Find out what is rare in your parts.

I would pick a Black Duck because of thier dwindling numbers. It would have to be a nice one, not a first year bird.

I'd pick the one I shot first. first because it is your first, and second because it's dead and that makes mounting a lot easier. Good luck hunting!

I hear ya A2. I was wondering what to get mounted myself. I shot a awsome G.W. Teal in full colors today. He's going on the wall with my first Canvasback.

IMO, the first one you shoot.......if your lucky it will be a double and you can get both of them mounted in a pair.

When I was hunting in Arkansas last year I took the obligatory trip to Mack's and they have their ducks suspended from the ceiling as if in flight. They probably have fifty "flying" birds in the store in all different possitions hanging from fishing line. To me, it looked much more natural than flying in front of random drift wood. Google taxidermy and you will get alot of different ideas. Just pick one you like.

I'd have to agree with everyone saying mount the first bird. I wanted to mount my first one this year but couldn't because he got pretty messed up... instead I mounted the first bird my dog Toohey retrieved. It's only a Blue Wing Teal hen, but I love the mount and Todd Huffman at Birdman Studios took a sketch of mine and made an amazing mount for me...

I think if I had to rank Best First it would go a little like this:

1. Your child's First
2. Your first retreavers First o.k. All of your retreavers First
3. Your spouses First ---if you want 4
4. Your First...... Of each species!
