can I use my 76 wingmaster?

Postby kwood » Sun Sep 01, 2013 1:46 pm

I started duck hunting a few years back. I have been using a 76 wingmaster 12 gauge modified choke that I bought when I was 16 and basically never used for one reason or another until three years ago. I have been shooting steel 4's-2's. I clean the gun almost after every hunt. I have never seen one scratch or any mark in the barrel.

Should I stop shooting with this barrel? Logic tells me no, or is there something I do not know?

Secondly, I have come into possession of a 1947 model 31 with a Hester's Vari-Choke that has 6 different settings. It is in very good condition. I would love to take it duck hunting. What do you think about using steel with this relic?

Any thoughts would be much appreciated, Thank you.

Remington say's that any of their guns made after 1950 with mod or more open choke are steel shot safe.

Thanks A5, that sounds good for the wingmaster, I guess I should hold off on the model 31

Good to go on the Wingmaster. I would be hesitant to shoot large shot or very fast loads however. #2's up to 1550 fps should be fine. I would say no to steel on the 31.

I concur with the previous posts. I'd shoot the mess outta the WM, as I do with my 1979 Mod choked WM. If you want to take the 31 hunting I'd have a qualified smith check it out first. I'd feel better about shooting the 31 if it was a fixed choke gun... Never been a fan of an adjustable choke, just don't trust em. And z51 brings up a good point, a tungsten or bismuth non-toxic load would be a very good idea.
