Mixing shells, full bodies and deadly decoys

Postby Hunter MN » Wed Sep 11, 2013 10:03 am

Was wondering if it would be ok to use a mix of full bodies, shells and deadly goose decoys. If I had the money we would run all full bodies and shells, but since we don't, we are just using the decoys we have. We have 2 dozen big foots and 2 dozen shells, with 3 dozen deadly decoys. Any suggestions on how to set up in a field with these as far as placing the deadly decoys or if it would be ok to run a spread like this? Thanks for any help. Bunch of duck hunters trying to figure out field hunting.. Haha

Uh yea. Set them up how you want. I would mix a little but set full body towrds the downwind side so they are looking at tjem as they commit.

Mix them up. Watch how the birds react to the deadlies. Bigger resident type honkers sometimes shy away, but i've seen migrator sized birds crash right into the deadlies before.

Just my $.02, you may want to leave the deadly decoys in the bag. Early season birds do not require big spreads,I'm thinking the full bodies & shells should do the trick.....If you are worried about your spread numbers, you may put a few out to bulk up your spread but, keep em to the inside of your spread......as stated, those ole resident ganders have seen alot of spreads  Set em out in small groups of 3 to 5 decoys and get-er-done
