870 Bolt/Breech

Postby scruggs12 » Sun Sep 15, 2013 7:59 pm

I took my 870 apart to clean it. It seems the breech/bolt assembly is either loose (lot of play) and then will get stuck in the up position and have to be forced down. Is this normal???

P.S. I bought the gun, don't need bashing about Remington or should have bought ......... Just need to know if this is normal or if I should take it to a gunsmith

I assume you are asking if the bolt should move upon the slide and it should. As far as it being tight, that doesn't sound right. It should move freely back and forth on the slide, working the locking block (inside the bolt assembly) in the process.

Are you talking about only when the assembly is out of the gun?

Yes. It is the littler housing with the firing pin running through it. It doesn't seem right, but it could just be my imagination.

If it works correctly in the gun it's fine.

They are loose. All the 870's I have and the 1100's, 1187's use this same type of lock up. Put a little oil or grease on the sides and call it good. If it shoots when assembled and allows you to eject either the fired hull or drops out of the way to eject a loaded round when the release is depressed all is good. Getting stuck in up position when you are cleaning it is probably because it goes farther up when not assembled in action.

Thank you. Makes sense, it is my first 870 and first cleaning of it. Only hunted 1 time so far.
