HOG ISLAND

Postby Dbrucker13 » Tue Sep 17, 2013 11:47 am

Was wondering what the water levels were? Do you need a boat to hunt it? Also are there any areas in Virginia you can walk in and hunt the marsh?

The water levels at Hog Island are shallow for the most part during the teal season. There is usually a huge crowd and they group you with 7 to ten other hunters. With all of the new hunters, it is going to be a zoo. Make sure you pack four cans of bug spray and bring a light coat to keep the skeeters off. Above all else, make sure it is a teal before you pull the trigger. There are a lot of birds here (shovler, wood duck, pintail, mallard and gadwall).

Hog Island is a lottery hunt for the regular season.

The only place I know you can walk in to hunt is Ragged Island on the James River. Most every other place is over packed with deer hunters to even think about duck hunting. Even on Ragged Island I would wear blaze orange when walking in and out as they will shoot anything that moves on state land.

Yep a little of both here i suppose :lol3: ....

Did hog island, got 2 geese, would have shot a third and a teal but had a group set up 200 yards up the cove from us so pretty much anything flying to us, they shot on first. Lucky they could only water swat because they got one of the three geese that decoyed to them and we got to run clean up on the other two. Hardly any teal out there. I think maybe 6 were shot out of 50 hunters. the gang left there and took the ferry back stopping at a honey hole for the best gas station grittle biscuits on that side of the james. Went to chickahominy and did some scouting and popped a few squirrels while walking the woods. All and all a great day off work.

Did it as well. Saw someducks never pulled trigger. Felt good to get out. Loved the area 51 search that gave me 2 minutes to form my spread

Wish i knew yu were there. could have joined our group.

Yeah the search was ramped up due to the naval station shooting which is completely understandable. You do realize that is a nuclear facility they are letting you drive thru with shotguns right? It usually takes 2 to 3 minutes per vehicle. I do agree it was tight getting setup in time. wish i could have been setup 130 minutes earlier and let thing settle down.

what # stand were you on?

i am willing to bet the teal show for this upcoming wednesday

Hog Island used to be a great spot and great hunt before the rise of Southern Duck Hunter.com and all the later duck forums.
Used to be you could hunt Hog Island, on standby, hell 4-5 times a season easily, and have good shoots. Throw in the fact that you or your bud would get drawn nearly every year, and you could hunt nearly every weekend, if you wanted. Place went completely to hell with the rise of "interweb duck talkin."
