Hey guys, on my most recent trip to da U.P i got some bugspray/deet on one of my echo poly inserts while calling some ducks around. I tried everything, mineral spirits, turpentine, hot soapy water, even boiled it. NOTHING WORKED, untill it struck me that all my inserts were flame polished. DUH, so i took the grate off of the gas stove, and tried my hand at flame polishing. it took the dull foggy deet off the insert completely, but my slow handwork resulted in a couple tiny tiny bubbles on the end of it. owell. when i did some looking around on the interwebs i found that its quite the common occurance for calls and spray to come in contact. But never a solution, idk maybe yall new this already but just thought id share!
DEET while effective if pretty harsh on plastics. Fly line, watch crystals that aren't glass, heard it dissolves frog togg material. Used a non-DEET(Picaridin) alternative on a trip to Isle Royale, seemed to work well just needed more applications. doesn't eat plastic.
It is not the Deet but the propellant that causes the problems. Modern aerosol propellants contain a plasticiser that will melt or etch plastics and this is what is getting on your calls and will booger up gun stocks. It will also etch and spot PVC and composite decking so anybody with those materials make sure you don't use it on the deck!
knew about the canisters, not the pads. BTW, There is another product out there that uses those canisters...I can't think of it off the top of my head, but they are 500% cheaper than buying ones marketed for a thermacell. Same damn canisters!
