What if they had a dummy with a go pro on its head and recorded the fall.

Imagine if the antenna was powered up when you were at the top.

The RF would cook you so fast, you'd blow up like an egg in the microwave.

I'm not sure that would actually be that dangerous...

The waves emitted by the towers should be the same wave length as the ones used by your phone, car stereo, other handheld devices. In other words, even though the tower is very powerful it shouldn't be able to harm a human.

If the transmitter was emitting very short RF waves, close to the length of microwaves, then it could heat the body the same as microwave oven heats food.

I wouldn't want to put it to the test, but I think you would be fine.

I know that the HF antenna on a CH-47 Chinook Helicopter will cook you.

And it's tiny in comparison.

I could do it...
I use to work on cooling towers way back when. inside of 'em is a framework of 2x6's and 2X4's that the fill sits on. when it's empty, all you got to walk on is slim covered boards and you are 70-100 ft. up in the air.

Use to pipe fit too...way up at the top of some stacks on a scaffolding....and you are underneath the pipework trusting the scaffolding to hold you. (well, you do have a safety harness on, but still....)

No. Too many guide wires that you might hit.

I was thinking the same thing...there's gotta be guys who do that.

Yeah, that makes sense... HF or High Frequency waves have short wave lengths compared to LF or Low Frequency waves.

Microwaves are higher frequency than Radio waves that is why they will cook something.
All of them are electromagnetic waves, meaning they are energy. If an object can absorb that energy then it will likely heat up.

I believe...
LF waves are more easily reflected and HF more easily absorbed.
With that said if you were to absorb enough LF, you will heat up, it would just take a chit ton of power.

copterdoc wrote:And it's tiny in comparison.

Tiny in physical size and wave length, is much more dangerous... like an AM radio to microwave, same supply voltage and one emits death and the other does not.

But like I said before I wouldn't want to test it (that part of physics was not strong for me)

That seems like an awfully long way up to be trusting your life to galvanized 1/2" carriage bolts.

I spent over an hr. telling my self over & over that this an irrational fear, my coworkers asked if they should call the fire dept. to get me down, I replied, NOOOOOOOOOOOO. I was an officer in my local fire an hr. away. the fire svce. is a small community!

Needles to say, I talked my self out of my irrational fear, hopped down, grabbed a bunch of shingles & finished the roof!!!!!!!!!!

two story or single? i used to have a fear of heights but i actually got over it by falling off a 20 foot wall :lol3: one of the last jobs i was on at that job was the equivalent of a four story building (it was a house) and i had to form and pour the chimneys which were out on the very edge of the structure. i got pretty used to hanging off the side of the building tethered off to rebar to strip or build the forms.

still don't think i could go THAT high though.

2 story on the front, 3 story on the back. I just never know when the irrational fear will crop up. The last time it happened, I was on a single story building with a 5 pitch. I spent that day working off an 8' step ladder putting up drip edge.

They also have VHF, and UHF radios on helicopters.

They don't pose the same hazard. They don't have enough amplitude.

That antenna on top of that tower has PLENTY of amplitude. You'd pop like a balloon.

Do I need to get my copy of Tipler's Modern Physics out and say which frequencies are harmful to humans so you can quit fearing radio antennas?

The towers I maintained were not emitting microwaves like radar.
Its not radar.

High frequency short wavelength waves are bad.

Radio and TV...harmless.
Microwaves and up except for the visible spectrum can harm you.
