Thinking seaducks..

Postby cut_un » Wed Oct 02, 2013 6:44 pm

With the season just around the corner, anyone gearing up for the big water? Know it's hot, probably very few birds have made it down yet...... BUT........ getting close

Mid Oct. should have a few moving in and yes I am getting geared up to give them a go this year , Luke is telling me he wants to get into cooking and seaduck meat starts out nasty and the 9 year old cook just might hit on a gold mine . Then there is my neck and how it had me giving up the hunt a week before xmas last year , again hoping that looking for incoming birds a foot above the water will slow the hurt down for me . Got to love the season dates and I should get a lot of wing shooting it before the puddle ducks show up down here . I made a floater for the workshop which turned out to be just right for working longlines inside the boat .

Lewdog is right. I Cooper was better than mail order. Purchasing them in a case quantity is the way to go.

I made three dozen scoters an a dozen squaws. Getting the keels just right took a bit of trial and error....and quite a bit of lead!

It's good to see people making buoy body decoys , now take the next step and put the best one to the side and put it in the RRWS buoy body contest come this coming March . Nice looking cut buoys ,got a pic. of the bottom half of a finish decoy ?

That was kind of my thought as well lew. I am getting dialed in and practicing on these and then going to do an old squaw and actually enter it this year. about to put down the brush and start practicing the airbrushing. i used VAhunter's bandsaw to get a fairly even cut. started originally with a hacksaw and that Shheeeeeite is for the birds :lol3: I can snap a pic when i get a chance. I have a genuis idea for keels that involve pvc and sand instead of lead. Its still in the R&D stage though.

Make the heads and keel out of one piece that slides over the front of the bird. From the side with this design you can give the breast a rounded look and you dont have to worry about attaching the keel later. You dont need to weight the thing either.

I agree with HGWT. I also notch the float a bit at the front to hold the plywood straight while the adhesive sets and to bring the neck back some.

Why pay for crab pot buoys? Walk the lee shoreline of any body of water in Tidewater. Pick up enough to carve, for free. Just sayin.
