I'll have to take some shooting lessons from ya....between all my misses and the two "finish off" shots, it took me close to a dozen shells on Saturday to get my one black! That's one expensive duck!

Whats the MA limit on blacks? Up in Maine we can only take 1 per day. Is it the same down there in MA
?
The only problem we have up here is they tend to get in our way when we are trying to finish our 6 duck limits. It is so hard to tell a black from a female mallard. The only real way to tell is if they are flying together and then we always tend to take the male mallard and leave the hen.
DDG- I think the 1 per day limit on blacks applies throughout the country- is based on populations across the board (apparently in decline due to mallards encroaching on their breeding grounds, cross-breeding with mallards, loss of habitat, etc), and not locally. Can be frustrating for hunters in areas (such as Cape Cod) where the blacks often outnumber other duck species.
As for ID'ing blacks vs mallards, I find it easiest to do looking at them from below, as the blacks have a much darker belly contrasting with the white undersides of their wings.
Hope to see more mallards around here, as 1 black per day can get old fast...

I went this morning and there was nothing before I had to leave at 7AM to get to work - hardly a sound on the flats - just terrible. Wind was howling out of the NE around 20-25 kts. I'm gonna skip tomorrow and sleep in! The early mornings are catching up with me !
Thanks, Mike....the Cape seems to be a magnet for them...not to mention eider, scoters, brant, and buffies...as well as our share of honkers....might try the south shore beaches next time for brant and eiders (for a change of pace).

I lucked out the other day, one shot, one Black. It landed right in my buffle spread. This sucker weighed about 3 1/2 pounds. It was one big duck!!!
