How many of you guys buy meat?

Postby Tealer » Fri Oct 04, 2013 11:03 pm

I was thinking today, at the local store. The wife and I haven't bought meat in almost 10 years. We are lucky enough to shoot a few deer, pheasants, ducks and so on we have never bought meat. How many of you guys buy meat on a regular basis?

I do...no pheasant, elk bear or moose hunting here. We have deer, but not like some places-and I don't deer hunt. I'll go shoot deer on crop tags though.
I just bought 20lbs. of pork boston butt recently for $1.29 per lb.

We also buy chickens. I'll load up when friers go on sale for $0.59~$0.99 a lb. buying in bulk is cheaper.

Our gang eats three or four deer a year and gosh knows how many wild birds, pounds of shrimp and fish or bushels of crabs, but we go through plenty of domesticated meat, as well.

We buy pork loin on sale for 1.28 a pound a little chicken and a ribeye here and there. But 4 deer a year rabbit and duck is our main protein

Without buying meat you couldn't have "prime" rib.

I appreciate that. In all honesty though, I thought those were just ok. Since I've found a reliable source for prime they have been kick azz. There are a couple members here that have had both and all agree.

As a guy that loves food and cooking, yes, it is hard to imagine.
Wish the mallards I cooked weren't so over done....I should have used the thermometer you offered.

We raised a slew of them for the table when I was growing up. Kind of nuisance, but I'd have them again before I'd fool with chickens. Great eating.

A good set of pens that lets the droppings fall out of and they are not to bad. I would not do them unless they were outside.

If I had to rely on my hunting skills for meat I would be damn near vegan.

Ours were under roof in what had been commercial chinchilla cages with slid out and hose down galvanized trays for waste.

We buy a little pork and chicken. Beef comes off the farm.

I befriended a butcher who supplies all the (great) meat to a bar/restaurant we go to.
I give him an order of everything I need for months and we fill the stand alone freezer 3x's a year.

My wife was about to walk out the door to go BUY a roast beef. I said, "didn't we buy half a cow this spring?".
I also said "there are THREE deer roasts your sister and BIL gave us". " Remember?".

OMG the stink-eye look I got. Then she complained about needing a flashlight to look in the freezer so I showed her the light switch.

It has been a messed up weekend. :lol3:

It's a he11 of a lot cheaper than hunting for it. If you really think about it. But not as fun. :lol3:

Depends on where you do it, really. I kill 20-30 deer a year, and it costs me about $35 in bullets. For a deer worth about $200-$250 in meat each, that's a no-brainer.
