Not true, I have been known to raise cattle.

Hard to get that USDA Prime sticker on yard beef.

Depends on where you do it, really. I kill 20-30 deer a year, and it costs me about $35 in bullets. For a deer worth about $200-$250 in meat each, that's a no-brainer.

So you throw those bullets at them. :lol3: And what are you doing with 30 deer? Got gout yet? How many kids you got? Just wondering, you probably have a good answer.
There are still things worth dying for and 1 of those things is freedom.

Nuisance tags or you can buy all you want in Illinois? You can only kill two bucks a year, but you can kill a deer per permit as long as you keep buying them.

I didn't mean to sound like I was piling on. Just saying since we don't feed them out, we don't get rib roast, rib eye, etc.

You guys are thinking about Illinois hunting. Research deer hunting in the south east. Not uncommon to shoot 30 a year.

Yep, crop damage tags. But we get unlimited does as well. The damage tags are nice to spread out the fresh meat over the year. There's 4 in the family, and we'll pretty much eat the deer as fast as I can put them in the freezer. When I hear "we put a couple deer in the freezer for meat for the winter", I wonder "how the hell does that last?" Seriously, we eat the better part of a deer a week when we have it.

We haven't bought meat in the last 30 years. I buy and sell cattle, always have something around I can knock in the head. Used to raise a few hogs, but now just trap a few now in then, feed em out, then butcher em. This along with what deer, ducks, quail, and turkey my son inlaws and I drag in, keeps everybody's freezer full.

Your prime rib on that pit was hands down best I've ever had....real talk....

I appreciate that. In all honesty though, I thought those were just ok. Since I've found a reliable source for prime they have been kick azz. There are a couple members here that have had both and all agree.

You mean it gets better??? Mind. Blown.

I don't have a ton. We stick with about 5 tried and true family favorites. Although I do have two small roasts in a brine right now. Gonna make some venison corned beef, but won't know til next weekend if it's any good. Hope so, because I planted quite a bit of cabbage last month :lol3:

We don't buy red meat. Just chicken. Raising meat birds is a pita

For the first time in three years, I will be buying red meat again. No moose or caribou this year. Thats a drag. Oh well. More motivation to hunt harder next year....

we buy most of the meat we eat, but we finally got a deep freezer a couple of months ago, so I hope to significantly decrease how much we buy....

I'd like to put at least 3 deer in the freezer this fall, and hope to load it up with ducks if my plans to duck hunt in MS this winter pan out (there's just not a lot of good duck hunting opportunities around Tuscaloosa), couple of turkeys in the spring, other assorted small game and fish throughout the year, maybe a hog or 2 if I find someone nearby that wants to let me kill a couple for free.

I would LOVE to only buy store-bought meat if I just wanted to (craving a steak or something)
