Is this a hen mallard

Postby PnR_Productions » Tue Oct 08, 2013 10:34 am

(Sorry i wasn't sure where to put this)Ok guys me and my buddy shot these two "what we thought was hen mallards" two years ago. when we got them to the boat i noticed they were not quite the same.. I talked to a waterfowl biologist that thought the one might be a cross with a mottled duck. What do you guys think? There were shot on the Mississippi river in WI on 11-20-2011

I would have thought it would have been a bit smaller if it had been mixed with a teal. they were both fairly good sized birds, not huge but good sized birds.

I dont shoot many brown ducks. I see a greenhead and POW.

They could be mallard hens but...the black "tooth" on the bill says not imo.

Not a pure mottled duck. Possible mottled x mallard hybrid

farm duck hybrid
Buy it, use it, break it, fix it,
Trash it, change it, mail - upgrade it,
Charge it, point it, zoom it, press it,
Snap it, work it, quick - erase it,
Write it, cut it, paste it, save it,
Load it, check it, quick - rewrite it,
Plug it, play it, burn it

That's what the waterfowl biologist said he thought it might be. I just thought it was funny that it came all the way up to Wisconsin if it was part mottled duck lol

As for the part of bag we just counted it as a hen mallard because it looked very similar to one.

Either this or possibly a Mexican Mallard. We shoot mallard drakes and hens that have purple, blue, and sometimes green speculums. My best guess was mixed genes with farm ducks. Seem to be crapping up the superiors!

Might just be an old hen. They'll start taking on more male characteristics later in their life
