Duck Bands

Postby MN Quack Smoker » Wed Oct 09, 2013 10:35 am

I am bored in the south zone waiting for the weekend, I have always been curious about band recovery and we all know we cherish them as prizes. Thought it would be fun to see what and where MN hunters have shot and where the birds were banded.

I'll Start-

First band was a BW teal I shot in Windom MN when I was about 14 (1994) it was so small I carried it everywhere until I lost it with out calling in, so disappointed to this day. I actually thout it was banded in Laurel MD until I realized all the bands have the DNR headquarters on them. Lol

2005- Big Stone County - Drake Mallard - Banded in 2003 near Fergus Falls
2006- Windom MN - Drake Woodduck - Banded in northern Iowa earlier that year. Shot on opener, thought that was curious.

Drought ever since.....

I am bandless and pretty amazed that I haven't got one yet.
Took my lil cousin out on youth day last year and he shot a banded drake wood duck that was banded two years prior, in Iowa.

That will likely be the only duck this kid shoots his whole life, what are the odds of that?

My lifetime duck total probably isn't 4 figures yet, but it would be close. Haven't even sniffed a band, by myself or anyone else in my boat.

pintail- banded 8 years earlier in cambrose alberta
hooded merganser- banded in Missouri 2 years earlier; only reason I shot it was because it had a band
wood duck reward band of 100 dollars banded in nodak sot 4 years later
2 double banded bluebills shot on consecutive days banded together 3 years prior, shot on same lake, those were my first ones and are both on my wall at home!
been with a numerous other duck and goose bands

Must take luck... I met a group of 4 hunters that have been duck hunting together for the past 40 years. They kill about 20 birds a weekend all season and have never gotten a band.

7 goose bands and 4 mallard bands harvested in MN, 6 of the 7 geese banded and big stone refuge, the other a molt from wisconsin. All 4 mallards were banded in ND.

Have not any duck bands yet since I started out back in 09. Hopefully soon enough I can get one.

That sucks man, you still got your trophy though. I'm sure you will get your certificate email soon after they clean up this mess.

Only band I've been apart of was on a dove hunt this year by a friend. Shot in Canby and was banded in '07 in Brooks County Texas.
