My dog has made some awsome retrieves and he's effed up the day a few times as well. The time he figured out the water was only knee-deep and stood in the decoys giving us the stink-eye was priceless.

It was if he was saying, "you guys suck and I'll just catch one while y'all watch".

I did FF Milo and it was extremely hard (on me).
Starting on a table and doing little teeny mini-retrieves was hard on him.
Then the walking retrieves etc. PITA.

It did help a lot and got me focused on his bird-handling.

Where's C'doc. I need some negative reinforcement...
He needs to say, "Acorn, you did it all effin' wrong and screwed up a good dog".

Hand signals. Just showing off? Or a crutch for a lazy dog?

absolutely mandatory!!!!!

not a crutch if you whistle the dog and then send on hand signals....lazy if it hunts a little then looks to you for help

dogs can get up wind of a bird on water and might never get it with out correction and or a lot of wasted time.. hand signals are imperative......

crutch for a lazy dog. You bring the dog to get the bird not show him where the bird is so he can look like he did something . :hammer:

A dog-related issue I don't think has ever been thoroughly addressed in the dog forum that I'd appreciate some help with:

What is the best brand of dog food to feed a working retriever? Recommendations for specific ratios of protein, carbs, and fat are greatly appreciated.

What is "force fetching" anyway?

I put my black lab (the only "real" labs...) on a low carb, high protean diet, and something weird happened...

This lady from the web site I got this diet from came over to take pictures, as she said Fido showed a "remarkable" change from his original plump self... Then proceeded to take his lunch away from him... cruel b!tch.

Any guesses what went wrong?

I'm a little nervous to start Force Fetching the little guy...

Any help at all would be great...

Can blunt force trauma kill a dog, or must there be a penetrating wound?

Have witnessed that the administering of blunt force almost killed the owner. The dog ran around in disbelief kept looking back like what the F is wrong with this guy. Owner didn't get reaction he was looking for(I guess) and goes into cussing tantrum for like 10 min. Can't remember what dog did or didn't do but from my experience No can not kill dog!

Actually love "meat dogs". Had a black lab, Shadow, 12 years old that we buried last fall. RIP. hard headed as heck! Wouldn't sit at heel, wouldn't come half the time he was called, didn't know hand signals but when the guns went off, game on. Fetching machine! So many stories we talk about him. Hunting with a guide with him for 5/6 years. Buddy screamed all morning "control your dog" broke 4 dog clips 1 morning but fetched everything that hit water. Would retrieve 2 mallards at 1 time. Over and over. Caught chit about that too. Just said he smarter than you dogs only has to make 1/2 the retrieves to get same # of ducks. Seems pretty smart to me. Hunted his own way not perfect but damn I miss him. Got 3 year. lab now heels, comes when called, heels, don't break till sent, hand signals. Just not the same. But still a lot of fun.

How do you stop one dog from pissing in someone's waders because you took another dog hunting?

30% protein. 20% fat or more. I feed mine diamond. Is good for the price. The performance line. If they sell Enhance 30/22 dog food where your at that is great food. Pro plan performance is good but pricey.

As long as their not your waders...

I wouldn't worry about it...

But you could try an ear pinch while holding down the continuous button on the remote(make sure it's on "lift off" or it will NOT work) all while yelling "BAD DOG... BAD DOG"!

My first Lab was named Blackie and sounds like he got reincarnated into Shadow. Did Shadow chit in your truck a lot?
Tear down blinds to get at the birds?
Did he dive underwater for birds too?

Great story by the way.

The best dog food is chicken bones, followed by pork chop bones, followed by deer bones.

Blunt force trauma can not kill a good well-trained dog.

Force fetch is a slight of hand training method that has no real benefit other than faux bragging rights to failed dog trainers.
