1 oz target loads

Postby Sagebrush » Fri Oct 11, 2013 10:27 am

Was doing a few 1oz. loads with different powders and noticed that the crimps were coming out
at different heights in the win. AA and Rem. STS hulls.

Also noticed that a win 7/8 could work with the fast powders that took up less area/volume than
the slower powders like Red Dot. Found out that Green Dot is not the best powder for 1 oz loads
at least with my loads that I tried but nice for 1 1/8 loads.
Even tried some Bullseye in a 1oz load that worked ok but I had to use the old Mec Jr. with a brass
washer to keep the powder leakage down to a minimum.

I put some shot in the wad cups and came out with a ruff estimate on shot volume for each wad +/-
and don't pay attention to the one cb 3118 wad on the far left. Thought the height of the wads
was interesting and did notice that the green Remington wad did hold a full 1oz. payload of #8's.

Just thought that a picture of the wads might be enjoyed by someone.
Just killing time, until I go bird hunting.

With the time to meander through and the means to improve ones loads , I think you are feared by all ventriloquis birds ,
baring you shoot straight ? Loading them and shooting them , is the question ?

Thanks for the info , carry-on !

Try a green duster with 19gr red dot and a win primer. 1oz. STS hull. My favorite load!

I kindof like those pink wads for my 1 oz loads with 16.5 gr of 700 X for my first shot in doubles.

For practice , this same wad works well with 7/8 oz of shot along with 700X .

I use Clays powder for all of my 12 ga target loads. In the Remington STS and Nitro hulls I use 1 oz wads for 1 oz loads.

In the Winchester AA hulls I use 1-1/8 oz wads for the 1 oz loads and 1 oz wads for my 7/8 oz loads. With the bulky Clays powder using one size larger wad sure makes a better looking reload in the Win AA hulls.

I have not shot any 1-1/8 oz loads at Sporting Clays, Trap or Skeet since 2004.

With the price of powder and lead shot these days I have gone down to a 7/8 oz. payload of
#8.5 or reclaimed 8's for practice trap and skeet at minimum velocity with the Rem STS and win209 primer.
Here are some of my 7/8 oz. loads..........

13.5 grs e3 .........AA12L very minimal just above a "Blooper..( 12.9 grs no good, 12so wad no good per crimp )
14.0 grs e3 .........AA12L 1165 fps 50 straight trap at the 16 yard with a top Mod. with #8's

16.5 grs Red dot ...cb 078 1160 fps 50 straight trap at the 16 yd with top Mod. with 8.5's
18.2 grs Red dot .. cb 078 1290 fps........ factory field load in "My" O/U Browning, if you like FAST.

I just found a pretty good deal on Federal Premium Gold Medal Plastic 1 oz 7-1/2 Sporting Clays target loads at Rogers Sporting Goods.

I have been wanting to get some plastic Gold Medal hulls but there are none being sold anywhere around here and I don't like the idea of buying hulls and then paying for $20.00 to $40.00 to have the hulls shipped to me.

Rogers price per flat was $72.99 and they only charged me $10.56 to ship me 3 flats of the FGM target loads.

I loaded up 1000 1oz loads with tightwad. Using bushing #29 in my mec 9000H and they have a great crimp and smoke targets at 40yds just fine. This is dropping 17.6gr powder consistently and with about 15# wad pressure AA hull and wads I might have found my new favorite 1oz load. I have not checked the velocity yet but I am guessing right about 1200.

We shoot a Red Dot load with MEC 33 bushing-can't remember exact gr amount- CB1100 wad in a Rem hull. Used for all of our shooting with #8. Loads and finishes great and is an easy to shoot load. 1250fps is what it's at. ...Have fun...mauser

Try about 18 grs of Titewad(not titegroup) with a Fiocchi 616 primer, a fig. 8 wad and STS hull. Running fast. Decent patterns to through my 1100 and Perazzi.

Tightwad is almost like Bullseye in my pistol loads........

Funny that you stated 18grs of tightwad.......
that is the amount of Bullseye in my old manuals for a 1oz load at 1200 fps with a 12so wad, w209 primer.
Used this load many years ago when I had lots of Peter's Blue Magic hulls.

I'm kind of partial to 17.5 grs of 700X ,CB 1100 wad in a 1 oz load ,loaded in a tapered hull and a ched 209 primer !
For me and my guns , it's a smooth shooter with good velocity and patterns really good , with little recoil . I like this load
with 8's or 8 1/2's for targets inside of 35 yds and for Doves and Quail 7 1/2's , sometimes !

Titewad is a good powder for 1 oz loads, but it is very dirty!

With some advise from BT , I have been shooting some 1 oz loads with Longshot powder . I started these out on the
fast FPS side and reduced them down with less powder , to a very nice load . They shoot clean and seem to stay together
as patterns show a lot of potential . I do have 11 lbs of this stuff . In the past I only loaded high velocity loads with
Longshot and very hard lead shot ( Plated ) but , now I have more use for it !

The powder I shot for the last 4 trap seasons was Solo 1000 when I could get it for $8 a pound. Great powder for 1 1/8oz loads and extremely clean burning. I still have 2-8 pound jugs of S1000 but am being conservative with it till I can get some more again. I bought an 8 pound jug of Titewad in the winter for $100. About the cheapest powder around right now for target loads.

I have plenty of different ( cal ) bullets , what do you need ?

Here in this State , politicians tell us what we can use for bullets as time is running out , to use lead !

I guess , they think Brass won't hurt as much as lead , to some ?
