I feel confident that I could tell a blue bill and ringer in hand. Drakes at least. The hens I'd be checking on.

I would say two ringers on top....

I've heard lots of folks call ringers bluebills. It's not like bluebill is the actual name so I can see how folks can exchange the terms.

What is its actual name then? Are we going to have to stsrt using their latin names? Because if you say scaup while in minnesota, you are also wrong.

The duck that many people call "ringbills" because of the prominant line across the bill are actually called Ring Necked Ducks...due to the dark chesnut ring around the neck...Out east, they call blue bills, "blackies"....There are two types of scaup, the greater and the lesser....both fit into the general term of "bluebill"....see the link

http://files.dnr.state.mn.us/rlp/regulations/hunting/2013/waterfowl.pdf#view=fit

The DNR calls them scaup here in MN, so I'm pretty sure for the sake of limits...the greater and lesser scaup would be included in your 3 bird per day limit...

I would correct them ive never heard ringers calld bluebills once ive heard ringnecks call ringers and ringbills. and the bluebills are blue bills or scaup and if its a lesser or greater you throw it in.. but ive never held or shot a greater. or we refer to them as the jets.

Hillybilly...the Greaters have the green heads and Lesser purple. That Bill in the photo has a very broad bill and may well be a Greater. If a Greater, the bird should physically be about 50% larger than the Ring Bill. Best way to verify is by the wing feather check. Please google it as I cannot remember what to look at and why. Nice birds....mauser
