I don't think a 3.5" shell is ever needed. You're gaining pellet count . If you hit a bird with 65 ish BB pellets from a 3" mag, what is an extra 20 pellets going to do from a 3.5" mag? The bird should be dead.
Pattern density is a good thing, but I also like to have a bird left to eat. I've killed more birds than ever with my 3" guns the past two years. Recoil is much less, so you can get on your second shot quicker. Also, shells are much less expensive.
