Crawfish Duck Success

Postby GarDuck » Tue Oct 22, 2013 9:19 am

Howdy folks,

I was wondering if anyone could offer some free advice for making crawfish farm hunting as successful as possible. I'm currently leasing several hundred acres of crawfish farms that are full of rice and weeds! Unfortunately it is very dense and I'm concerned the birds will not want to land due to the thickness of the weeds despite the large amount of water underneath. We are fortunate that we have a lot of waste grain on the ground from last year that wasn't harvested. I have read some people say just use a 4 wheeler to put your deeks out and that will be enough. However its my impression that will not be enough to really let the birds stack up. Are my concerns unfounded? Does anyone have experience with this type of duck hunting? Also it should be noted the farmers are duck hunters themselves and are very supportive. Thanks in advance for helping get a young hunters feet under him.

If there's really that much grain, it sounds like you don't really need to "do" anything. I think you're going to find that unless the weeds are 6' tall and impossible to walk through, you're going to stack up with birds. It would however be nice had they disked before they flooded.

Word of caution. DO NOT DO ANYTHING that will scatter waste grain with an ATV or a tractor or anything else ...

Thanks yea it seems like there is some gray area as far as whats considered scattering obviously the boats that they use to fish will knock down some weeds and spread some seed so it seems like movement through for the purpose of laying down weeds could be seen as in keeping with agricultural practices. Seems like even walking through will inevitably knock some rice off just not sure where line is. I hope the wardens are really just worried about over the top baiting practices.

I'll hunt it for you and let you know.

But I'd consider posting this up in the Louisiana forum and see if they can help you since they probably have multiple members that hunt crawfish farms.

Don't think there is a lock on the gate because I don't have a key. But the owners live there so they might not like it
