Winchester 1300 chokes. Steel????

Postby clymerfowler » Thu Oct 24, 2013 8:02 am

My friend has a winchester 1300 and it has the three factory chokes. Full, Mod, and improved. none of them say anything about steel shot. can they be used with it. he wants to use the mod for opening week and switch to the full after the woodies are gone and we are just shooting mallards and geese. we took a few shots with both and they batter great with the full being a little better at 40 but dont want to hunt with them and risk damage..

Stay away from tight chokes and large shot and it will be fine. FWIW that mod choke will likely give you a full pattern of steel and the full will probably be too tight. The best way to find out is to take it out and pattern it.

I have a 1300 that I used for a few years with both IC and M factory chokes, with no problems. My boy hunts with it now.

Full choke has its place, you just won't be taking any 20 yard shots.

I took a 20 yard shot yesterday on a woody with my patternmaster and a load of 1 1/4 #2. Not good. Luckily, and I don't know how... but I got 3 in the head/neck, 4 in the back under the right wing, and broke the right wing to pieces with God only knows how many hits. None in the breast. If I aimed 3" lower it would have been a minced woody.
Why do I shoot 3.5" for geese? Because they don't make a 4" yet!

I have a 1300 its my road hunting gun now. I used to swap chokes back and forth. I always leave mod in cause I like tightest pattern. Anything from trap led up to 3" 2 shot steel, put in improved for BB and up
