single shot brake action opens when fired

Postby cj5patrick » Mon Oct 28, 2013 11:37 am

I have a old us arms single shot shotgun. Its from around 1915 or so. When I shoot the barrel cracks open. Can't find parts and not sure if its something a gun smith can fix... I got the gun for fifty bucks so I don't want to spent to much fixing it. It is my grouse gun and it shoots better than anything else I have. Any suggestions are appreciated.. thanks

On a shotgun that old, the latch mechanism may be worn out. Your personal safety and that of others is worth more than fifty bucks so a trip to a reputable gunsmith for proper diagnosis of the problem before the next hunt sure wouldn't hurt.

Most likely worn out and not worth fixing. you would pay more to have it repaired than you can buy another used single shot for. Due to the safety issue I would just dispose of it and pick up something else. I had one that would actually fall apart upon firing at times, So worn out that the forend would come off in your hand and then the barrel would literally open and drop off the gun. I scrapped it before I got hurt.

Has it has a good thorough cleaning. Maybe the latch mechanism is fouled (internally) and can't lock in place.

Bet its got a 2 1/2 inch chamber. Seen it before. I'd like to see a fired shell.
