What are these???

Postby phutch30 » Mon Nov 18, 2013 9:31 am

So me and a buddy were hunting on canyon ferry the other day and we kept getting these weird ducks into the decoys so we shot a few. Never shot them before. anyone know what kind they are?

After looking in the bird book I think they are just a color phase of the northern pintail

I have never seen one around here in 40 + years of hunting. That bird is an Oldsquaw. We shot lots of them when I lived in NJ. They are usually found "off shore" or on Great Bay off Long Island. Good on you guys.

Oldsquaw? you sure......thats a racist sounding name. I cant believe they would allow a name like that. Seems like in todays enviroment they would be forced to change it to a more politically correct name.

I doubt that's a old squaw, not in Montana. Thinking some kind of cross, maybe pintail widgeon or something.

Thet are now called longtails. Since old squaw seems to offend the sensitive types. But most if not all people still call them old squaws...

Huh well that makes sense. Been reading up on hunting these things. Seems like it could be a dangerouse kind of hunting.

One more thing, when we shot them late in the season they some times had two long tails, we called them split tails.

I've found it to be way easier to Id a dead bird in my hand then one zipping through the air. I believe in shoot first and I.d. later. Talked to the chef at a Chinese buffet today and Mr Lu agrees they aren't old squaw.

Where da fuq is Lake Huron? And where did I report a near death experience? Unless you are talking about me almost having a heart attack after walking up a flight of stairs.

Maybe avoid Mr lu's establishment.....and buffets in general and you can avoid heart attacks and near death experiances. having said that I went to a chinese buffet for lunch.
