Duck ID-Seaduck?

Postby duckman27 » Wed Nov 20, 2013 2:10 pm

Need an ID on this one. Buddy of mine shot it this morning and sent me the pictures asking what it was. He says it's smaller, about gadwall/wigeon size, but definitely smaller than a mallard. Feet are bigger than your typical diver. It kinda looks like a ruddy but is way to big to be. I'm thinking it's an immature hen surf scoter. It was shot in Colorado. What do y'all think?

Look at the size and the tail. Says Ruddy to me. A common scoter should be mallardish in size. that thing looks small in his hand.

Nostrils are way too far forward to be a ruddy. Looks like a hen black scoter.

Definitely a black or common scoter(which are 2 names for the same bird), a Ruddy has a more rounded Bill and a smaller nail at the tip scoters have a slightly longer pointier bill with the prominent black nail at the tip that is a hen black /common scoter. Hen ruddies also have a dark stripe thru the lower lighter portion on the face. Google image them both and it's pretty clear.

Hen black scoter. Buddy shot one last season and it threw me off too because of the size and the fact that I had never seen one in FL.
