Otter Slough 12/7

Postby tybean » Sun Dec 08, 2013 5:18 pm

Well we were at Otter Slough yesterday. One of the only 27 parties that showed up. Anyone else get out anywhere? Wondering why there were not more parties.

my guess is nobody wants to mess with the ice.

About 85 percent of the place is locked up in ice.
Bird count went from 60.000 to 12,000 with the storm.
Hunter average on the 7th was 1.4 birds.

The big crowds that come to the slough are usually 2 hours or more away, on a good day. Most will not fight the ice on the roads or in the fields to hunt.
The duck dynasty crowd is not into bustin ice.
And quite honestly, if you are from the area, you should have enjoyed the low turn out.

And the south zone is open now also. Some are hunting there now. But for the most part it is what 2Longgone is saying. The ice on the roads bothers me more than having to bust some to hunt. I'm glad that most roads are clear now.

Were from around the Farmington area. Knew we had a good chance of getting to hunt. Left at midnight and took our time. Was well worth it to me. Busted some ice, kept a hole of water open and knocked out a 3 man limit. I'm not too sure I would go off the recording about that 12,000 count. Refuge lake was overflowing and looked like more were heading in. Did not see the field refuge but what we could see they were pouring in there as well. Hopefully you guys have a chance to get out, I believe that it is going to stay hot around the south. That 1.7 average was a big surprise to me, but then again we didn't hear much shooting after 9 o'clock and if anyone knows it down that way it is to stick it out til 1. We shot most of ours from 10 on. Good luck to you all and let me know if you have any success. We will be at DC Friday on a reservation.
