a.m. hunt, how do you get birds to lift?

Postby cobra bait » Sat Dec 21, 2013 11:44 am

went main river again this morning, ice in my area was clear. stayed pretty fogged in most of the time out. didnt see much. had a hen/drake mallard set feeding below me. i worked them just out of shooting range on the call but they wouldnt come any closer, at least they didnt spook. couple groups of birds do a quick fly by of the dekes, so foggy though they were here and gone in a second. then a hen/drake buffle head (i guess?) came across the dekes and dropped north, they worked down into the decoys, i stand up and yell, and have to jump and make commotion then they lift, dropped two shells and missed again. the mallards flew out. i am having a really hard time getting lined up on my gun this year. i was just below them. of course had stuff to do so clean up around 9, the fog lifts and i am out picking up decoys and have birds 30 feet from me. urrrghhhh....

what do you do when birds swim into your decoy spread? it seems i have to act like a moron to get them spooked to jump to shoot them, and by that time my shots are a total mess. i am used to pass shooting and hunting the bigger water has been a struggle for me as far as shooting as i said in other posts.

i hoped to have my boat together but it will be this coming year oh well.

Water seat one and then try for two more when they fly.
