What would you do

Postby stumpjumper1590 » Tue Jan 07, 2014 7:28 pm

Today was a tad slower then I expected. Started off with my limit of redheads and missed a couple of opportunities at some buffleheads as we'll. As the morning progressed I could tell that the birds were just going to hang out on the water all day so I decided to pack up and leave. As I am getting my stuff together inside the blind a drake redhead crashes into the decoys. I instantly notice something's not right with the bird and that he is acting weird. As I look closer the entire bottom half of his beak was dangling by a small piece of flesh. I watched the bird for another 5 minutes before deciding to shoot him as we'll. Now I know that I shot a bird over my limit, however I didn't do it for enjoyment or sport. I simply felt horrible for the bird and could see he was hurting bad. Now I am prepared for everyone's opinions on this so let's here them.

Although illegal, I think you were in the right and I can't say I wouldn't have done the exact same thing. Good job putting him down.

I didn't try to hide the bird either if I would have been stopped I would have been honest with the warden up front about it.

Personally I don't think we should have to let any wounded animal go to waste, or suffer...it sucks when a 14" trout swallows a hook, and you have to watch it float away on its side, or a wounded duck swims into the decoys after you have a species limit. (This happened to me a couple weeks ago...it was a beautiful Pintail drake)

The problem is that there are a ton of people out there that would take advantage of the system. Plus, our state has a bunch of idiots enforcing the laws that have never hunted or fished.

Here's another good example of BS laws...if the bay were to reach the point of freezing many of our fish would die, but instead of allowing us to harvest them the state let's the fish rot away. (This happened in the 90's)

Also, never admit to anything...if you don't admit to it, and they don't catch you in the act there's no case. Free legal advice provided by :-).com

Screen shot and sent to game warden. Hate that redheads commit to decoys so easily and it's quite common to shoot more than 1 with 1 shot but you can only take 2.
You may all go to hell, and I will go to Texas.

Sometimes the law does not cover 'doing the right thing'. Common sense won out in this case. I hate having cripples. I chased one for an hour one day just to get close enough to spend 3 more shells on him. Kind of rough watching a cripple. You did the humane thing, Stump. Might I suggest a call to the GW to give him the facts? All of them I have met have been reasonable people and will likely applaud your concern for the wildlife. :clapping: Honestly, even if you get a ticket, I’d think it would be worth it.

hypothetically speaking. If you were to do such a thing you would be a true sportsman with a deep compassion for the game you chasing. I can't say that I would not do the same - internet confession.

I once watched a deer hunting program with Ron Spomer. He was hunting deer in PA and only allowed one buck for the hunt. It sounded like a war in the background with all the gunshots. Some one had wounded a small buck nearly blowing off its front leg and it happened to cross his path. He decided to take the small buck and end his hunt. Staged or not I thought this was one of the best things for hunters and non hunters to see.
Granted this story is a little different as it was all legal, but chosing to put an end to the animals suffering to an end was a good thing to do in both instances.

I know some disagree and some agree with the decision of me taking that bird. I know if I shot it that it was against the law and over my limit, which is wrong.
However, if I didn't shoot it and let it die a slow horrible death that would be wrong as we'll.
Some get caught up on the fact that it was illegal, we'll so is speeding and I'm sure everyone does that. It was the moral thing to do and I still feel I did the right thing.
The GW were contacted and no fines were issued just a few questions.

They are just setting you up for a sting operation. Next time you are out they are going to release 3 more redheads with broken beaks right into your spread.

Stump, just about all of us have broken a game law before...it's almost impossible not to if you think about it.

Some are honest mistakes, and some are on purpose. I've outgrown the "on purpose" law breaking, and paid my dues...one of my most memorable hunts resulted in $3,200.00 in fines. (That's both state & federal) I was 18 at the time, and that money wasn't in my budget.

Thank God the warden went easy on me! I'll never forget it, and since then I try my best to keep it legal.

You did the right thing!! I'm willing to bet with your history of serving in the military, if checked, the GW would probably just confiscate the bird.
