Oh brother, I could talk all day about this stuff.
I know I've said it here before, but I would love to see a waterfowl license option. Get rid of the zones and lets hunters choose between a statewide license that begins roughly when our season starts now, or a license that begins oct 15 and runs till dec 15. If you would rather shoot teal and wood ducks early then hunt deer in November, you're out of the way of the guys who would like to hunt the last big push.
Personally, I have a hard time picking on youth hunts. Let the kids go out and rip away them for a day. It's something that works both ways. Sure the kid has a blast, but seeing that happen also motivates adults to keep taking them. If that means the birds get a little lesson before the opener, big deal.
I don't know particularly what our DNR does and doesn't do, but I do know a little bit about fisheries and wildlife management and I understand that their job is pretty difficult. I don't agree with every decision I see made, but I don't begrudge them. It's funny you mention complicated regs. That's the #1 compliant the DNR receives, yet on the fisheries side, the #2 complaint is "We want more lake specific regulations."
Hard to please everyone.
I'm glad that good spots are hard to find. I also have the youth and temerity to go and find them. If you want to hunt the easy, crowded spots, you take what you can get.
I don't like the south either.
