Bad goose mount, ideas anyone ?

Postby wcbm8d » Tue Feb 25, 2014 2:23 pm

So I had a mallard done by a taxidermist, not gonna mention the name, and it looked amazing. So, when I shot a goose with a neck collar on it I THOUGHT that would be the place to go again. I was wrong. I came back a year later to get the bird and it looked like S***. Before I could even say anything , he said " yeah I think the collar stretched its neck out a little. "

anyway, I was too nice of a guy to say anything , so I paid the guy took it home and it looks so bad I didn't even want to display it.

Now. I tweeked it's head position a little bit, and it looks a little better. But after thinking about it, I'm pretty proud of that bird and I just don't like the mount. The body looks nice ( standing position on a log) but from the neck up it looks terrible. Skinny neck. Head seems weird.

Any of you have any ideas on my next step?

Do I take the collar off? Shoot another bird?

Anyway let me know what you all think. I will get some pictures up.

How do I get this collar off ?

What you are asking is to buy a bird that wasn't picked up and is illegal for a taxidermist to do that. Mounted birds can't be sold unless pen-raised with papers to document that. I see posts like this often and always ask, why did you pay for it without making your feelings known. No, a collar won't stretch the neck out on a bird. sounds like made the neck too long or didn't taxi the skin up or both. Just simply a taxidermist not knowing what he is doing. Sad but many trophies end up this way. Fixing it is at the least impossible to have it anyway presentable. Hard to tell your options without pictures. I will say a collared bird needs a little special treatment as the feathers alone can't support the weight of it without a little work on the inside. Not trying to be the bad guy and hate that you are unhappy. Just hope you learn from it. Let's see some pictures as there are some great taxidermists on here that might be able to help.

Yes I am familiar with the law . The sale of migratory birds is illegal. Thank you for the information. I was worried it was too late for this bird. Have any good ideas for solvent to get the collar off?

Post some close up pictures please.....

If you don't plan on saving the bird just cut it head off to remove the collar.

If the feathers are just laying too flat on the neck you may be able to wet it down with Coleman fuel, fluff it with an air compressor and hair dryer, and get decent results. That is what I would do for that issue but every scenerio is different. The problem with collars is it takes a lot of extra time to get the feathers properly positioned where the collar wants to push the lower ones flat. The collar has to be pre-anchored somehow or it just keeps the feather issues increasing.

I'm sorry, but I seriously laughed. Dude take that sucker back to him and ask him if he is seriously going to let that walk out the door with his name attached to it!

Dude don't even attempt to salvage that... Take it back and demand a refund. I feel bad for you man. What an abomination of a sweet trophy. Get your bling back and your money back and shoot another.

I guess I should have said my honest opinion right away to the guy, but I didn't want to insult his work, like I said he did a really nice mallard for me. Seriously, the mallard looks awesome. Thank you all for your input.

I'm not the type to take crap back, but I wouldn't go back, nor would I have left his shop with that bird.

So for me I would say lesson learned. I would shoot another bird and put the bands and collar on the replacement bird.

After seeing that recent speck Pat, would you not agree that there are better taxidermists out there? Wink

Whoa man! I don't have much room to speak because I've got a frankenduck recently, but had I been the one to pick it up that bird would've stayed where it was...off with the bling and on to somewhere else.

Ouch, that hurts and I feel badly for you. Taxidermy is a service, just like car repair or lawn service. If you aren't satisfied, speak up. You only have yourself to blame if you don't. Afraid of hurting his feelings? What do you think he did to you.

If that was a bird i did i would never let somebody walk out my shop with a bird like that. I would just shoot another goose and put the collar and bands on that one.

If the collar has a greater diameter than the birds neck how would it stretch the neck?

When you skin any bird the skin will strech somewhat once it is detached from the meat along with fat being removed. You can tell he doesn't do many birds because he didn't even know how to just taxi the skin back into place and must have added quite a bit to the length of the neck.

Can you post a pic of the Greenhead so we can see what a "good" mount of his looked like ? There are many different definitions of "good" and "great". Not trying to beat up on you but someone who mounted that wasn't just having a bad work day.

I remember the post when this goose was shot. I was looking forward to seeing the mount. I had a guy mount my first and so far, only banded duck. Has a head just like your goose. Best thing to do is talk to him, try and get any kind of refund back, shoot another goose, and get it mounted. This seriuosly mad me sick to my stomach. Might as well rip $300 or $400 in half.
