Can some of you please give me comments and suggestions on the attached paint job of some old mallards? Can you at least tell what species and gender they are supposed to be? Please let me know what I can do better.
Thanks,
Jeff

Maybe more brown than black. Not a big deal you cold paint them all black and they will still come in.

From a hunting standpoint, I wouldn't worry about them that much. From a looking like and actually bluebill hen standpoint, I would make then brown rather than black, increase the size of the watch patch in front go the bill, and dust the bill down to more of a grayish blue rather than a bright blue. If you want to go really detailed, you can put a touch of gray on the back, so it is a little lighter than the head chest and tail.

I agree with Hydrilla. More brown and a lot less black. I would also focus on making some Drakes too. The drakes are what is really going to bring in your birds more than the hens. The white will pop and stand out a long distance out attracting flocks that's why when you buy a dozen it it's 2:1 drake to hen ratio. I think those will work though, they're better than using soda painted black.

Glad to see I'm not the only one who repaints for divers! I agree more of a dark brown on the top a lighter brown under the wings and widen the white on the bill. Also I have taken just some of the cheapest flat black spray paint that I can find and just barely faded it over the bill to darken mine. All in all good job your most def. headed in the right direction have fun and good luck!!!

Make the bodies brown and the bills bluish-gray, not bright blue. Then add a buff area on the head at the base of the bill. Would not be any trouble and would be a lot closer to the scaup hen. The way they are, they don't look like anything in this hemisphere.

Find a color photo of a scaup hen and you'll get the idea.......

As you get older, and hunting time is more available to you, it can get easy to go back to a honey hole too often. Next thing you know, it's not so much honey and more of a hole.

Use primer grey for the bills. Not baby blue. Looks better and closer to the real thing
