General banter

Postby goldfish » Thu Mar 13, 2014 10:29 pm

Seems we have enough in here that we could have a general whatever topic. Might help keep other topics on track too. Maybe for non-duck hunting topics as well, like Mille Lacs and the walleye fishery. Just say what's up, need to get a rant off your chest, show off your hand that now has one less digit, etc.

Yay? Nay?

Works for me.

Might have some stuck in spring snow sled pics later on today. 33 outside on Minnewawa right now and I don't plan on riding until this afternoon.

Never really got into basketball.

I can't remember if I said this here. There could be a pond close to a residence that I might know of that may or may not have about a foot of water on top the ice, that may or may not have been calling out to a snowmobiler to water skip it. But since water skipping is illegal in MN...

General banter

I didn't see anything but I didn't look close. Looks like a 2x something mounted on the bottom with a keel weight.

There are 4 or 5 more I just grabbed the best looking paint and heads.

Foam decoy? Kind of looks like it was molded with a brick in the middle, a primitive "suck duck" perhaps? Very cool.

Apparently they found it worked better with the brick removed.

That is some awful hard foam. Think they are cork. I will wash the dust off after the weekend.

The bottom piece is wood.

ok its 3am and all I can do is think of duck hunting lol watching sea ducks getting shot out of layout boat at close range is awesome. gona order me a little gadget tomarrow for dispatching birds looks cool I normally bite the heads but sometimes I got one I wanta put on the wall and a crushed head isn't to fun to skin.

Just squeeze their side pockets...works fairly quick and no mess. Or for a bigger bird just run a pocket knife from the mouth into the skull. It sounds mean, but its likely more humane than swinging them around to break a neck, and does essentially the same thing as biting them.

That's what I said on hillbilly's Facebook. Squeezing the side pockets is called the taxidermist squeeze. I've also seen if you bring a syringe and inject air into the brain it'll put them down quick.

And yes, water skipping on a snowmobile is illegal in MN. Don't know if the DNR cares if it's on private land though. If you have an event for it and get all the permits and crap it's legal

Another method is to put the bird on the ground then put your knee on their back and put all you weight on it. Very quick and clean. It always strikes me as odd that as hunters we kill birds, but we all want it to be quick and painless. I guess its one of those things, if someone's not one of us they won't get it.

Ive done them all minus the pocket knife... between the pocket knife syringe and biting the head are instant death.

Check out the finisher from adrenal line. Seems to me it would make a bigger hole than I would want.

Got this off of another hunting dog website. Thought it was a good read.
