Postby cominahead » Fri Mar 14, 2014 1:57 pm

i am training a lab pup in my neighborhood pond. she is doing great my question is the neighborhood just released 6 yard ducks in pond. will this affect her training? should i move training elsewhere so she doesnt get familiar with staying away from these birds? thanks for the response guys.

No. Always good to have 'em around.

I'm with him on this one, we go out of our way to train around live birds - but begin doing as distraction to known basic obedience, so Pup knows he's to pay attention to the job at hand regardless. I'd not want to be trying to teach something new while Pup's distracted by the birds and end up confusing him into thinking birds are bad, rather than that retrieving his bumper, for instance, regardless of distraction is good.
If you think I'm wrong, you might be right.

Always good to train with distractions. Pepper's Ponds north of Seattle has goose nests in the ponds. The geese see dog trainers often enough that they will stay around for hunt tests.
