Looking to get a small mud motor 6.5 hp for my Grumman Sportboat. Any suggestions including brands would be helpful. Seems I can get a new long tail for $1500 or less. Surface drive seems to be more in the $2500 range.
A 6.5 HP Backwater Swomp Lite or a 7 HP PPF Wood Duck would probably be awesome on that boat. The Swomp Lite runs $1550 the Wood Duck is $1200. I've seen the Swomp Lite at the Backwater shop when I picked up my Swomp23 motor. I know they have a great bearing system and am really happy with the 23, so I imagine that the Lite would be awesome too. My bro in law is getting a Wood Duck this week and I'm curious to see what it's all about.
I've thought about a similar setup and like the idea of the longtail over the surface drive. You have more reach and leverage if you get stuck. Not sure which motor I'd pick yet, but one of those two for sure.
I run a long tail . it's amazing what a fully loaded Grumman sport canoe will go through with a little 7 HP . I run the PPF . pros quick Pin release for portaging Cons motor needs to be strapped down to the boat until after unloading and before loading on the trailer, and I found it quite difficult to get the Angle iron bracket bolted to my transom properly . if you don't need to remove your motor For portaging I would definitely take A look at back waters . there transom mount and locking features are the key items I would look for in a new motor purchase. all long tails are pretty much bulletproof good luck with your choice hope this helped; Hedge.
