PIERRE, S.D. – A recent proposal by the Game, Fish and Parks Commission would add a couple new areas to South Dakota’s early fall Canada goose season.
"One new area would be titled ‘Unit D’ and would encompass of all Union County," said GFP Assistant Wildlife Director George Vandel. "Good Canada goose numbers have increased in Union County to the point were a September season is necessary to control their numbers, so hunters should find some good opportunity in this new unit."
Another area that would be added to the early fall Canada goose season would be the portion of Minnehaha County that was in the 2004 special Canada goose Unit C. Additional goose harvest in Minnehaha County is needed so the system of permits has been eliminated. The change should allow more harvest of these local birds.
Season dates would be:
Unit A: Sept. 3 – 11 (change from Sept. 1 – 5 in 2004).
Unit B: Sept. 3 – 23 (change from Sept. 1 – 23 in 2004).
Unit C: Sept. 10 – 23.
Unit D: Sept. 10 – 15.
Daily limits would be five Canada geese with 10 in possession.
Only South Dakota residents could hunt in units C and D.
