Thats not true anymore.
Basic differance between the Guard and Reserves is that the Guard has State missions (riots, disasters ect.) in addition to Federal obligations like Iraq/A-stan. The Reserves typically cant' be called up for State missions.
You may get extra benefits from the guard which vary from state to state( Free lic plates, tax exemptions, cheaper tuition)
Dont' let anyone talk badly about the Guard or Reserves. They may not have as high a PT score as the active forces but they often do as good or better job at their mission because they tend to have older experienced troops who bring civillian skills and mature judgement to the fight.
