SX2/Carlson Mid-Range/Speed Shok Pattern

Postby MD Duckbuster » Tue Nov 11, 2008 8:24 pm

As a new member, I'd like to thank all of you for all the good info I've received from this forum.

After reading many posts, I selected a Carlson Mid-Range extended choke and Federal Speed-Shok 3 1/2", #3, 1 3/8 oz., 1550 fps.

Came in at 78% (163/209) in a 30" circle at 40 yards.

All of those HD patterns look good to me. The BC and BB tend to look a little clumpy in places and light in others. Then again I love to see lots of those small dense pellets.

it seemed like both guns liked the HD #4 shot 3", my mossberg935 seemed to also like the 3.5'' BlackCloud BB at 30yds. the Black CLoud BB shot at 40 yd wasn't that good. it could have been the operator though....i may have jerked the trigger.

if i can afford it i'll stick to the HD #4.....if not....i'll probably shoot 3.5'' BlackCloud BB

This is with the Carlson's Dead Coyote tube. 1 1/8 oz #8 Federal from 35 yards. If I could get this with a goose and duck load I would be happy.

For those that use Bismuth...............here is a 1 1/4 oz of #2 at 1300fps out of my Browning A-5 Full .
Does well on ducks at 65 yards but only 55 yards on big Honkers at 45 degree angles, pass shooting.

24grs of Buffer really helped out the patterns and after steel and 800-x failed, I finally came up with a good load
with Fed G Medal hulls and winAA 114 or G12 wads, both for 70% but the G12 held 111 pellets vs 102.

Pattern c/o 15 & 30" circles.

Image

Here is my standard decoy load by Alliant: G Medal 1 1/8oz #5 at 1430 fps on a 50 yard pattern with 15 &30" circles.
This load actually does well at 47 yards at 4,500 foot elevation with a 85 / 122 total 207 pellet pattern, since only
5-6 body pellets are needed to drop most ducks . Extended Mod lead choke.

Some more out of my Franchi Alcione with 30" ported barrels and Briley Extended chokes. All loads are RSI Sam1's with #1, #3 or #5 steel. Too tired to post percentages right now J

here are a few on my turkey gun. Well it's acutally my waterfowing gun too. I am putting on a scope this year. It's a SBEII 26" barrel and an indian creek choke tube. Polished the SOB to a mirror finish. It took 5 choke tubes and a load of loads to find theperfect match. The circle 12.25" wide and at 40 yards. Not alot of room for error.

I didn't draw the circle or count the pellets in the shell or on the board to figure the percentage because i feel it is a complete waste of time. If I shoot at the pattern board and It looks good then thats all that matters. I'm not going to shoot a shell thats $10 more a box for 1-3% better pattern that is ridicules! This is on a piece of card board about 30"x30" and the shot was take at 40-42 yards. The guns is a Browning Maxus 3 1/2" chamber, 28" barrel, and a extended range patternmaster spun in the end of it. The shell was a 3" 1 3/8oz BB Remington sportsman. This is going to be my shot of choice this year and years to come. This just goes to show that some good research and careful selection on your gun, choke, and shell will yield great results. Dont believe all the marketing hype that say their wad will give better patterns or their speed is what you need to get your limit this season. This is about the cheapest load you can buy and is shooting 1300fps. Perfect for a patternmaster or any choke at that.

I don't like that pattern, wouldn't hunt it
Buy it, use it, break it, fix it,
Trash it, change it, mail - upgrade it,
Charge it, point it, zoom it, press it,
Snap it, work it, quick - erase it,
Write it, cut it, paste it, save it,
Load it, check it, quick - rewrite it,
Plug it, play it, burn it
