Hey guys I've never done it and I want to give it a try. I was at work today and remembered a place I saw in the Spring that looks sweet for teal, if there is even any water there now.
How about some pointers for me and anyone else that is a novice teal hunter.
Do I need teal decoys? Call? What kind of spots should people look for? Just trying to get some helpful info out here for me and others before season gets here.
I used 1-2 dozen of regular mallard decoys. There are teal calls but I have got them to turn using a greeting call from a mallard duck call.
I had really good luck with 3" #3's federal speed steel. Some birds decoy when there is not much pressure but most will give you a good look flying by. So I think #3's are a good combination.
All you need is a little standing water in a grain field, (Best), but when times are dry a small shallow creek will work too. If you have a couple of teal decoys it won't hurt. We had none.
Sounds good guys. I think I'm going tomorrow morning to check out a spot or two. I'll probably be fighting the dove hunters though. Thanks for the info.
You don't need teal decoys. Use mallards, just a few, and take mostly hens as the ducks aren't in full plumage now. Think of them as super magnum teal decoys. Teal calls are cool, but I don't really know if they work that well.
I have never taken my robo teal hunting before, although they are spinning everywhere in the public hunting area I go. I will probably take one this year just to see if it really works with teal. I don't believe teal are all that impressed by them. But who knows?
My robo will be going as well. Doesn't hurt to try and stack the deck a little more. I hear it is going to be nice and cool Saturday. Only going to make it in to the low 90's. Perfect for duck hunting right!
Yeah right. I don't think I'm going to get out until Tuesday, because I'm taking my girlfriend to Hunter's Safety courses this weekend. What a blast huh. Oh well, it will be done and over with before hunting really winds up. Going dove hunting Friday night too so I'll let ya'll know how it goes.
Thursday looks like a good day! We are supposed to get rain on Wednesday and about a ten degree drop in temp. Could be what we need to get some birds movin.
I went out this morning, Monday morning, to Shawnee Trails conservation area. Had one plop down in the dekes, 14 teal dekes and 6 mallard dekes, right at shooting light. I had my back turned and heard the "splash". I looked into the spread and counted 15 teal dekes. Counted again, 15. Should only be 14. Stepped out and kicked the water to get him up. About 30 minutes later the dekes got buzzed by 15 or so. One plopped down and the others passed 3 times before heading east. Never gave me a shot so I shot the scout bird that was siiting in the dekes. I had to kick the water to get him up to. That was the only birds I saw. Left at 10:00 a.m.
Ya, you would figure that they would get up when they first saw me. Both I had to kick the water and one I had to yell at it while kicking the water. They didn't act frightened at all.
:salude:
HuntMQ1, I had the same problem jumping a few out of my dekes. I only had ten mallard dekes out with a robo in the middle.
I had a group of ten land about 20 yards behind my dekes and then about 3 singles throughout the morning land right in them. They were also landing in there like crazy before it was light enough to shoot. I could hear them setting down in them.
Jumping them up though took a little effort. They would try to swim away instead of fly. I had to actually run at a couple of them to get them to fly.
I posted the pics in the HH, but I stick 'em up here also.
I like my buddy's gun in it. That ooooold Stevens 20 gauge side by side is great.
Thanks for the compliments on the picture Webfoot, hopefully I'll be able to put some more up here when season gets here. I can't wait to start layin the hammer down on some big ducks. I know you guys are probably thinking the same thing.
Yeah, you're going to have to help me on posting some pics. It sounds like I just need to get them uploaded then play with the img stuff.
I just need more time in the day, but then I would only work more...
