Postby timmey9 » Tue Oct 07, 2003 10:44 pm

Its quiet in here and i don;t see alot of new posts so i thought i would start one i saw on another forum.

Whats the oldest binded bir you have gotten.

A few years ago i shot a 8 year old mallard. I could harldy read the tag as some of the numbers were warn right down. It was banded as an adult so it was over 8 years old.

What about everyone else?

The oldest banded bird i have ever shot was an 9 year old common goldeneye(whistler), I shot over here on lake nipissing after breaking the ice for about two hours to get to open water in late november, they say that the average life span of a common goldeneye is about 4 and 1/2 years so this was quite an old one.

You are the only other person i know that calls them whistlers. If i call them whistlers everyone always asks what a whistler is.

I killed a 9 year old Mallard Drake that was banded as an adult. That was in North Louisiana 4 years ago. He was banded in Manitoba.

7 year old mallard drake a couple years ago - it was banded in the next town over from where I recovered it on Great Bay.

In Ellington CT, back in 1984 I believe, I got an eight year old goose. She had been banded in Mich I think.

I shot a big bull Can about 20 years back. It weighed in at 4 3/8 pounds  It was banded---no way to tell the numbers it was so worn, heck where the leg bone was it had worn away the metal 3/16" down. It is REAL old to say the least--but exactly how old is a good question. Too bad the numbers could not all be seen. :(

9 year old speck

Postby greentimber » Sat Dec 20, 2003 11:32 pm

In 2001 I killed a 9 year old white fronted goose. His gray neck collar was worn in half, how that happened I don't know and his leg band was worn smooth. I could barely see the numbers on the leg band. By far these bands were the rarest in my collection. :D

I've shot at some birds that had to be really old cause the shot just bounced off them. :toofunny: Honestly the oldest bird I have shot that was banded was a 4 year old goose that was banded in New Brunswick and the other two birds that had bands were 2yrs and the same yr as shot. Both were banded in Round Hill 30 miles from where I hunt.
