I've just returned from freezeout lake where I hunted ducks for about 2.5 days and spent the rest of the 4 day trip scouting. There are no new birds there yet. It was hot, sunny and sometimes windy. We decoyed with about 30 dekes and had some action on the first day of hunting. 2 of us took 8 birds that day: gadwall, pintail, canvasback, mallard, buffelhead and a few of some of those.
Day 2 we took my 14' skiff out on one of the ponds and decoyed. We took 4 blue wing teal and 2 gadwall.
We also shot a few shovelers pass shooting today and blew a few other opportunities.
All in all we worked very hard for the few ducks we got and I would not suggest going there. There were plenty of skybusters and some other jerkoffs like the ones that turned their generator on at 4AM right next to our tents. We saw some huns and a female phesant and there were lots of people after them in the not so duckey weather. The birds are smart, flying high and over water.
You can use any motor you want on Freezeout and after burning through a trolling motor battery in .5 day we had to paddle the boat around which was not so bad. I think a mud motor would be the only way to run in the place. I only add this because there is another thread about it.
Never having hunted it before it was cool to see it and now know where to go when it comes time. Saw about 40 snows and about 100 swans. Most were in the protected area or on Priest Lake. There you have it you duck hunting freaks. Anybody know where there's some action to be had??
