I reload steel and reloaded lead back in the day. Here are my recommendations for the average hunter.

1. If you don't already own the required equipment, you will likely never recoop your costs unless you shoot one heck of a bunch of shells and then you'll pay yourself minimum wage,(at best) to reload.

2. If you purchase components at retail prices and have to purchase hulls in be in the hole vs value shopping factory loads.

3. With enough experimentation ($$$ and time) you will likely a round you really like.

4. You will likely discover that STEEL propellent best lends itself to 1-1/8 oz loads. Moving payloads +\- 1-1/8 oz will have deminishing results for different reasons. If you are seeking 3-1/2" 12 ga or heavier 3" loads, you'll be diappointed.

5. Buy high quality shot if you like longer shooting.

6. Always weigh both the shot and powder charges.

7. Beware the claims of some on the web.

7.

Wow, I am glad that someone included a link to this webpage in a discussion forum. There is a great deal of information here that I have never read in any of the loading manuals that I have studied over the years. Now I can see what I have been doing WRONG for all these years and take corrective action to make better loaded shotshells.

You mention felt or cork filler wads. One of the recipes I'am going to use calls for a fiber wad 1/4 20ga. Is that under or over as well, and what would be best?

Can you use B.B'S in reloading a 12, 2 3/4 Shot Gun? I have a lot of zink coated and copper coated and can not find a reason not to use them. They are not for hunting, just for shoting at plastic bottles and rats.

Just wondering were you using a standard MEC 600 jr to prime and crimp your shell and you measured shot and powder using your beam balance? Is this something anyone can do with the basic reloading supplies that you listed?
