Winnipeg—The Delta Waterfowl Foundation supports the private member’s bill to eliminate the costly and ineffective long gun registry. Introduced by Yorkton-Melville Member of Parliament Garry Breitkreuz, the bill (C-301), if passed, would eliminate the long gun registry, streamline the licensing system and require a cost-benefit analysis of the Firearms Program every five years to ensure taxpayers are benefitting from it.

Interior Funding in Economic Recovery Act Would Create 100,000 Jobs

Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar, Senator Benjamin Cardin and House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer and Congressman John Sarbanes visited Patuxent Research Refuge and Wildlife Research Center in Maryland to highlight the job creation and conservation benefits of President Obama’s economic recovery plan, which is currently before Congress. The investments in the Department of the Interior that are included in the President’s plan would create an estimated 100,000 jobs over the next two years

Elementary school students are being loosed into a 20 acre wetland on the grounds of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Genoa National Fish Hatchery in Wisconsin – exploring, playing, and learning on their own terms. Through an interview and photos, hatchery staffer Jenny Walker-Bailey shares her experiences on how a National Fish Hatchery that raises endangered native fish and mussels is also helping to connect children with nature.

Ken Salazar, a fifth generation Coloradan, was confirmed as the 50th Secretary of the U.S. Department of the Interior on January 20, 2009, in a unanimous vote by the U.S. Senate. Prior to his confirmation, Salazar served as Colorado’s 35th United States Senator, winning election in November 2004 and serving on the Finance Committee, which oversees the nation’s tax, trade, social security, and health care systems.

Ultralight-Led Whooping Cranes Reach Florida

Seven of 14 ultra-light led migrating whooping cranes arrived at Florida’s St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) on Saturday, January 17 after traveling more than 1,200 miles from their summer grounds at Necedah NWR in Wisconsin. Half of the flock is expected to remain at St. Marks NWR for the winter. The rest of the birds will continue south to Chassahowitzka NWR, 65 miles north of St. Petersburg.

A cooperative undercover investigation by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Maryland Natural Resources Police and Virginia Marine Police has secured Federal charges against five commercial fishermen, a fish wholesale business, its owner and an employee for illegally harvesting and selling hundreds of thousands of pounds of striped bass.

Bismarck, ND—Delta Waterfowl has hired longtime marketing executive Pat Hudak as its vice president of membership and marketing. Before joining Delta, Hudak worked nearly 12 years for Cabela’s in Sidney, Nebraska. Hudak specializes in direct mail and corporate partnerships, among other marketing duties.
