28ga HW-15 patterns

Hey folks,
After opening up the Federal shells and fighting with beads and buffer I finally got a couple of loads put together. 30" circle and also these were shot from 30 yds. I was shooting some 410 tss loads at 30 and just didn't move.

First is just 7/8 HW-15 Cheddite hull and TPS wad with Lil-Gun powder. 1320fps.

Second is a duplex that I tried in hopes to open pattern up a bit. 3/4oz HW-15 and 1/4oz 5 Steel. 1290 fps

Those look really good. I put together some HW15 6's in my 28 for geese that i need to pattern. I'd like to see what they look like at 40. At 30 yards, you can shoot straight steel 5's or 6's for a lot cheaper if you want to limit yourself to that range.

Yeah, I was patterning some 410 TSS this evening and had my table set at 30yds... I didn't feel like I had time to move everything and still get the chrono to work at 40. I'll shoot some at 40 and maybe 50 and see what they look like.

Sounds like your having some fun. Hw15 out of the 28 will hold together a long ways out. Shot this pattern 4, 5 or 6 years ago when I was working on my goose loads for the 28. Killed a lot of geese with it since then.

The duplex load looks great and has no spacers. Excellent pattern at 30 yards. I have shot a ton of 7/8oz HW15 #7s out of the 28ga and they are superb, but require spacers and are a pain to load. I think I may have to move to the duplex load to save a little and drop the spacer and open the pattern up a bit. Well done.

Nice effort and work on these patterns, I haven't even opened the shipping box of my Fed HW15 lol...
Those look pretty good for 30 yds. First one a bit tight like you said, 2nd looks more open.
What size was the HW15? I got #7, thinking you did too?

Not sure how to think about those loads, what pattern I'd want at 30 yds though... tough call with #7 giving such long ranges.
3/4oz of #7 HW15 would be 165 pellets, giving 1.5" gel penetration out to 76yds or so for you in GA at 1000'msl. So plenty of pellets for longer range pattern density, and plenty of penetration-- which makes me lean towards the tighter group at 30yds, if you're going for longer range? You'd get 2.25" gel at 48yds or so, as a guesstimate for geese, so these might be better suited to that?

#5 steel gives around 21 yds and #4 steel give 28 yds for those speeds and 1.5", so more of a wad filler, but in your 2nd picture it looks like it maybe spread out to edges? In which case it's good that you get some early pattern bloom for in close since the HW stays tight for so long.

Which one do you like better?

I like the duplex. Even the HW-15 responds to a little bit of steel on top.

I'll probably try some more with different amounts of steel vs HW15....just to see what happens.

Here is my tested duplex load of 3/4oz steel 1/4oz #8.5 TSS out of the 28ga. Same hull, primer, wad, payload of shot, volume of shot, and powder as bullet's load. Powder charge is slightly different for both loads. Bullet's load is safe and I have test data to prove it. I will definetly be loading up some to see how they do in a couple weeks on the opener.
