Pamlico has gone exponentially down hill and the birds tend to hold only in the refuge. Gets you all excited till you go hunt on the sound and only shoot lawn darts.

Had a great hunt saw probably more than a 1000 birds. At 1 point right after it got light you could look at birds 360ﾟ in the air. Hundreds of pintails flying. We had 2 nice big flocks of pintails come right over the rig.1st flock I pull up shoot bird drops,I take the dog out and it ends up being a hen.It is what it is. My buddy and his daughter empty their guns on the flock not one falls, He admitted he got so excited he flock shot. These birds come around through over top pretty fast so I guess I missed the Drake and hit a hen.2nd flock comes by they empty there guns and nothing.

My buddy kept pounding Buffy's they were everywhere. I told him hold off on the Buffy's for awhile and sure enough we got pintails right after that. Guide said it's the year of.the pintail so not many redheads spotted so we didn't get an opportunity on a redhead.

Here is a couple pics from the trip. Apparently this is the only county were curtain blinds are legal And you can see a wooden raft behind the curtain blinds that's that's to knock the wave action down if you look in the one pics you can see how rough the water is up wind when it's calm around the blinds.

Funny thing the weather was show in 40ﾟ for 5 o'clock in the morning So I didn't dress real warm and it was supposed to warm up quick Then when we got up in the morning with 30ﾟ it was a brutal 20 minute boat ride to the blinds. Once we got there it wasn't bad at all. Because of all the sand bars the ride out was like an S turn after S turn on the boat at 5:30 in the morning. We jump out the boat into knee deep water at the rig the pumps out the curtain blinds with a 2" water pump handzus a radio says will be back at 1 unless we contact him on the radio. 0 cel service in the blinds. I definitely want to do it again now that I know what to expect

Glad you hit it right! I’ve gotten burned on public, private, with guides, without guides, scissor and curtain rigs there many times over the years I lived there. Your luck seems way different than most there. May not want to post your success on the NC and VA forums and get them riled up haha.

I spent many many days and weeks there always waiting for the chance to get back to the Mississippi flyway, but it was nice to see the massive amounts of wigeon and pins that hang out in mattamuskeet. Very unique sight to see.

Why do they call it a curtain blind ? Looks like a sink box

Yes a concrete Box within they have rubberize vinyl material hooked to a wooden frame that allows the inner curtain to be raised and lowered thus the name curtain blind. If you look at the picture of the inside with the wooden frame in the cleat with the rope you can lift it up-and-down with that rope and then tied off at any height you want the curtain. So with the changing tide and wave action you need to be able to adjust the curtain up-and-down to suit

We were no where near mattamuskeet

Just 20 miles East as the birds fly. Maybe the outer banks are going to outpace the legacy hot spots. Would be good. I hope the area gets back to the glory days it was given its the disputed birth place of American waterfowl hunting.

She was kinda a pain in the butt.1st off she had to swim from boat to box and since she is small she don't have the body mass to stay warm so she gets cold easily.That is 1 thing I did not consider when looking for a small dog. Plus her fur is not thick like my last dog. But any way I got the stand a week before hunt, cuz I knew she may not like the box, and worked her on it all week and she liked it.So we put her on the stand and she was shivering so bad stand was shaking and she wanted in box with me. She was fine in box for a while then Decided she didn't like it in there started panting bad and was clawing to get out.So I moved the stand behind the boxes close to edge of box and put her on it and she was finally fine with that and got her to lay down and didn't affect the birds coming in at all.She was so stressed on the hunt she swam out to birds but would not grab them plus with that many decoys she got tangled in the decoy cables all the time and they use a 3lb anchor weight so it would stop her. Quite a Stressful hunt for both of us surprised I killed anything.
