Anyone going out for youth day???

Me and a buddy are taking 2 kiddos out tomorrow to get mad at the ducks. Duel deadly combination. The 8 year old is a water swat specialist and the 12 year old is a very capable wing shot if the ducks don't want to finish. If the ducks work half as good as they did last weekend it should be a very successful hunt. Just hope the kids can hold out long enough in the cold until the big ducks want to work. Reguardless it will be a fun time followed up with a bojangles biscuit.

Yeah, we're heading out with two 12 year olds.

I never thought I'd admit this but here is: I am batting .000 (as in, none for '16-'17) for Bluebill this season. Not only me, but others in my parties as well.

It will make my day if one of the kids shoot one.

Of course the Northern Pintail, gadwall, and teal we shot last weekend in Hyde County made up for my blue-bill-less coastal season.

8 year old gave a few wood headaches but no kills. She was shooting a 410 and I'm starting to think it is just about impossible to kill a duck with such a light load after using it for 2 seasons.

No doubt about it, even in the hands of a skilled shooter the .410 is going to be limited to around 20-25 yds. max. with steel. Just not enough pellets in payload to get multiple hits on target. She might be better served shooting a youth 20 ga. 870 (as a single shot) or auto (for recoil reduction) if gun isn't too heavy for her.

Plan is to purchase a youth 20 for next year
Last year on the first weekend she finally got a teal after head aching a few others with the 410. 2nd weekend last year she was able to borrow a 20 and it was lights out on the patos.
Next weekend I will have my hands on another 20 because the 410 just isn't getting it done on those 15-25yd water swats.

What kind of shells are you using in it? We carried a kid that was shooting a .410 with Bismuth and it would kill them. This was a few years ago, not sure if you can even buy them anymore.

When I was a youngin still shooting a .410 I shot lead. It was all you could find for .410. It knocked em down alright.
Taking my cousin saturday along with my nephew and his buddy. Holding some birds in our pond so should be good.

Awesome hunt Saturday for the kids. We took 5 youth out on a private impoundment invite hunt and they shot teal, gadwall, pintail, wood duck, and merg. Unbelievable amount of green wing teal and decent amount of blue wingers about also. The land owner said the teal had just shown up on Friday and was the first large amounts he had seen all season there. The duck nerds will argue the teal have been down since November and have just been hiding out where us piss poor duck hunters can't find them and there is no such thing as a February migration. Kind of funny there was just a major snow storm up north and all of a sudden tens of thousands of teal appear out of no where. Even with the warmer temps and full moon the ducks flew steady up past 10am and were acting like there had been a multi day freeze up and we were hunting the thaw.

Took 2 kids out Saturday. They had a great time killed their limit in 1 hour. Couldn't believe the amount of ducks that we saw in the morning. The boys had a great time. It feels good to see the smile on those 2 when they dropped 2 bull pintails.

The teal definitely were not here until recently. There was a little push of them that came through during the season, lasted about two days and they were gone, but nothing like a normal year. A lot of bluewings are in the ducks that showed up recently as well and I don't think they are ducks headed north.

I talked to a guide in Hyde county that hunts impoundments and he said it was the least amount of teal they had ever had.
