Hybrid??

Postby Etanner » Mon Feb 13, 2017 4:31 pm

Hey guys, new to the forum here. Shot this duck on Saturday (second youth day). Was wondering what yall's thoughts were on what it is. Mallard/black duck? Juvenile mallard?

looks a mallard/wigeon cross, really neat bird. what county did you take the bird? A friend of mine got a mallard/gadwall cross this year.

Take a look at the coloring across the whole body. It appears to have the predominate coloring of a widgeon on its back as well as the green band on its head. in my humble opinion it is a mallard wigeon cross. not an uncommon cross.

Hybrid??

Mallard green wing teal hybrid. My buddy's uncle shot a bird that looks just like it and took it to a biologist in Florida and she said it was a mallard green wing hybrid
However, the bird you shot does have some characteristics that lead me to believe it is a mallard Wigeon cross, but it also has characteristics of a green wing teal. So I really don't know what to say. But if I were to bet on one over the other I would say gw teal and mallard
