Ducks

Postby Paul26 » Sun Nov 24, 2019 7:58 pm

Well, normally I would send this to my diver group on PM. But as it appears no one is hunting this year or reading duck chat, here we go.

I have seen next to nothing on the White Oak and the New River this season.

Made a trip out on the Neuse this past Sat and saw more than a few, however.

I check in from time to time, but haven’t done any diver hunting yet.

Saw next to nothing this morning. Very few Saturday. No real divers to be seen anywhere. Time to get to work and get the honey do's knocked out for a couple weeks.

Hunted sound two weeks ago, whatever day black duck case in. Scrapped out a one man limit between four guys. Rough day. Saw some divers flying across the way, black ducks, mallards and swan. Probably only saw 100 birds in 8 hours not including swan.

I haven’t been and don’t plan to go anytime soon. It is a serious waste of time anymore. It is absolutely heartbreaking to see what’s happened to duckhunting in our state. I have spent the last 12 hours fishing on a body of water that used to be a phenomenal price to duck hunt and did not see a single bird and not even a single coot at that. At least the fishing is good. I do check in from time to time. This place is as dead as the duck hunting is

Usually an optimist, but Mauler is right. Something has happened in coastal SEastern NC since Florence. I am not sure what, but it has not been good.

Doesn't seem like the divers use the north carolina big water like they used to in a lot of spots.

It's dead because the ones that kept it going got the boot....and there are no ducks in nc anymore. Place is a sh!t hole for ducks.

Only “diver” I’ve shot so far has been a hooded merganser that came into one of my woodie holes. This spot in particular usually has divers coming through regularly but haven’t seen any others this year. I don’t have the equipment to hunt big water, but I can say that I haven’t seen many flocks migrating over or flying up and down the river this year. Or last year for that matter.

Hunted a place last Saturday that usually has a crazy amount of divers. It's private and will really make you question doing another NC public hunt ever again type of place. I get invited a few times a year, luckily. Maybe saw 1 group. Nothing but woodies. Last year and the year before they were everywhere.

Hunted the reef at Ocracoke, did not see much at all. Great crop of Cormorants this year.

we scouted over 20 miles on the water this past Friday before the opener. Came across 2 flocks of birds, maybe 2-300 in one, and 100 in the other..... 95% were bufflehead. ZERO big ducks, less than 50 divers other than bufflehead.

The days where puddlers congregate in any meaningful numbers on the sound around Mattamuskeet south to Pamlico Pt./Bay River/ Nuese have long since gone. Many reasons for that. I was fortunate to shoot wigeon, pintails, Mallard’s and Blacks all on the same hunt in those areas almost on a regular basis couple of decades ago. Yes, things change. Plan accordingly.

I recently looked at the state by state harvest report. The worst situation I saw was Louisiana. There harvest dropped from over 1 million in 2017 to about 500K last year. The ststes around us kill a fraction of what is taken in NC.
